Right, the car has been in today for its first MOT and to investigate the noise at cold start up that sounds like the exhaust is blowing/rattling badly for 90seconds, then a release of air/whirring followed by smooth uninteruptted idling.

http://www.dartmedical.co.uk/car/Recording.wav

I had been reliably informed that this was the secondary air pump split... but the dealer just phoned to tell me my centre exhaust is blowing. At 26k i find that staggering personally (i had a MK4 Golf 1.8T on its original at over 90k FFS!).

I personally think im being fobbed off as i only have 2 weeks warranty remaining...

its your secondary air intake it blows air over the cat to warm it quicker, totally normal.

The noise is especially loud if the pipe is split, or if the pipe is connected to an induction kit etc, sounds like the downpipe is leakign etc, that sort of area

DOnt worry about it :)

Right, seems they were trying to pull a fast one, as a visit to 3 independant garages confirmed there is bugger all wrong with the exhaust and it has, i quote "years and years left", which i expected.

So what now, do i book it back in and play hard ball? Im running outta time here, only 10 days of warranty left, and its getting louder and louder, even kicking in now and again when i stop at traffic lights.

And i wonder why people hate dealers, wanting me to fork out £367 for a part they knew fine well was okay!!

so it does it all the time now? Sounds like you have a leak in the exhaust then, if its only on a cold star, e.g. 3 mins into journey it stops, then its still the secondary air pipe.

Mine isnt connected to anything its just hanging in the engine bay as its broken, makes a loud noise then turns off.

Unless you have a leak in a manifold gasket or something.

Yup ive never been to a dealer since they scratched my car!

Just to clarify.

Get the noise on cold startup for about 2mins, then settles to normal quiet idle after a very clear release of air/pressure.

Car is fine after that but occassionally does it at traffic lights or when stationary... seems to coincide with fans coming on??

All the posts i've read on the likes of uk-mkivs seem to indicate its definately the secondary air pump.

Mines doing the exact same or something simular, Since i park in a garage, i can notice a little rattly kind of noise as im pressing accelerator. It also sounds like a blowing from the centre exhaust somehwere. I took it to quik fit and they said looks like a CAT is on its way out. But took it to onother two garages, they both said everything is fine. You can't notice the noise driving back. But when i was parking into my garage, there you go, the noise is still there little rattle nd blowing sorta sound.

Ok, they noise has got worse, its def from exhaust, and im pretty sure it must be something related to the CAT. I have notice a loss of performance. Its very significant. I can hear the turbo spining but don't feel the car pulling as is use to.

HELP!!!

Have you got it booked in with Seat or an independent garage yet? The only way to solve this is get a pro to check it out.

I have, but the earliest the local seat can do it on is wed 24th jan. Tell you what though, £89 for a check to see whats wrong? sounds steep to me. Also he was very pushy trying to tell me,

" when the cars checked, and we see whats wrong, we'l give you a call and tell you whats wrong before we go ahead with replace it"

I never asked him to i wanted it replaced, just trying to make more money out of me, if it is a CAT, It gives me an excuse to fit a sports CAT or something :p

OH a full check (just a check, not touching or replacing something) is £110 wow. But hey im not a tight arse, just never thought i bought a Merc!

That's a lot of money just for a check! National Tyres gave my other halves Puma a full check over for free last weekend to find out where it was blowing from.

Iv put in into SEAT. £88 and 6 hours later they told me............................."Your cars fine sir, our specialist looked at it, spent 3 hours with your car and cannot find a single thing wrong with it". So i asked what have you actually done to check whats wrong with it? He replied "The mechanic took it for a little drive for a couple of miles to check if boost was ok, the car wasn't acting unusual in any way. All was fine, then he looked underneath the car, checked for loose joints, leaks etc. All fine, we used the VAS computer to diagnose any problems and again, all fine sir"

Buit when i went to pick the car up, i could still hear the noise, i draged the mechanic out of the garage and said, "THERE!, now do you hear that?" He replied. "Nothing sounds abnormal to me, that little rattle you are hearing is the Flexi pipe, thats ver common on theses cars"

What does every1 else recon of that?

I still think this is the air pump that has been mentioned before and is perfectly normal. I also think you're concentrating on it so much that it's driving you crazy and detracting from your enjoyment of the car.

I hope so, I mean i didn't drive it for a week, just left it in the garage until the inspection day, and drove it carefully to the garage yesterday. On the way back from collecting it, it was like the 1st day i got the car, its definately got alot of power in it still. But try block out the noise, its because when i go to park it in the garage, the noise can be heard clearly thnx to the garage walls.

However, the guy who i brought the car from, absolutely loved this car, i emailed him. Told him all about it. He was also concerned about it. Can tell he miss's it so much, that he booked another inspection with M1 Auto's in kingbury, london. This is the garage the car always got taken to from the day he brought it. If anyone knows this car inside out then its them he says. They will do an inspection for free too!!! What a brilliant guy.:funk:

Think he will book it for next thursday. Fingers crossed, Hope they don't think im looney too :(

It definately sounds like the secondary air pump to me. Mine went from a slight rattle/blow to an all out horror noise within a few weeks. Theres a thread somewhere with my wrangle with the dealer and SEAT to get it fixed, but rest assured it was the air pump, and has been fine since.

Unfortunately, whilst the technician acknowledged its an incredibily common failure, SEAT UK seem to turn a blind eye and happily charge customers upwards of £250 for a new one.

it definately is something simular, The noise can be noisier on some days than other's. It also does it even if the engines fully warm. As i said, hope M1 Auto's SEAT can solve the problem. If they do find theproblem, then i shall take my car back to the local seat where i got it checked, and ask for a full refund for their check.
