Ebay cable

I have now recieved my cable from ebay and it looks good. The thing is i cant get it to communicate with the car and laptop. I have read the sticky but it wasnt really clear what i had to do.

When i go to options in vag com and select the ports, only COM3 comes up as ok but at this point i dont have anything connected to the laptop, anyway what could i do to get it to talk to my laptop and my car?

is the cable usb or serial, have you removed all com ports from device manager and redetected the hardware/rebooted after? were you trying vagcom with the ignition on?

Wow, ok so i seem to be doing this all wrong then lol.

First of all it is a USB lead. How do i remove the com ports from the device manager and why would i want to do this? And i didnt reboot after!

Also i think i was trying vag com with the engine running, is this wrong?

hve you got the USB to serial converter software.

I dont really know what i have mate, tbh i didnt think you needed any converter software although i did get a disc with the cable, think its just for the drivers though

yeah, the drivers - when installing the drivers, it should say "usb ---> serial convertor".

I have installed the drivers, when i plugged my new usb lead in, it came up automatically with the setup. But on vag com when i check the ports it come up COM3 is ok when there is nothing plugged in. is this right?

i got my cable off ebay and if it wasn't plugged into the car it would say "port status ok, interface not found" or something like that. i tried plugging it into the car and when i did the LED on the cable lit up (not sure if they all have this?) and it worked fine then. Can't remeber if the ignition was on or off.

Thats exactly what mine is doing and the led is also coming on when i plug it into the car but it doesnt seem to be communicating to the laptop. What com port did you select mate?

can't remember which port i used but i remember going into device manager, in the ports section, and opening the properties of the usb lead bit in there. went into the port settings tab and into advanced settings and tried changing the com port number in there to either 1,2,3 or 4. it wasn't my laptop i used and it was a few months ago so i can't be sure if it was this that got it working for me.

i use com port 4 on mine. It will only work if plugged into the car and the ignition is on (engine running is fine) com port 3 looked promising but wasnt actually the right port.
Just test all the ports, see if there is one that looks significantly more promising than the other. Then you have to run one of the scans (autoscan probably) then it should run fine.

If i doesnt work like that then id do whats said above, didnt have to do it on ine tho

so what about when it is all connected and your ignition is on, what does it say then?

i have no idea about what i explained earlier, its just one thing i remember trying when i couldn't get mine working.

if you right click on 'my computer', properties, hardware, you will get to the device manager from there if you need to.

OK, finally a bit of progress. i found out how to get to the device manager and check the ports and the cable wasnt installed.
The new cable is now installed but it is still doing the same with the ports on vag com, saying that COM3 is ok and the rest are not even when nothing is plugged in.

Finally got it to work which is great, im very happy thanks for all the help guys.

It came up with a code when i went to the engine option which is why the warning light was staying on, it said something about glow plug circuit in cylinder 1 and 4. i cleared it and the light went off
