I drive and LCR but am thinking of the Altea for my wife, prob 1.9TDI. We have just had a little boy and need something practical and safe that she could drive ok....looks like it fits the bill to me but is it a really good car, well made? or is not all its cracked up to be?

I've got the 1.9tdi Stylance and for the money you get a lot such as electric mirrors, cruise control, dual air con etc. We have two young children so the first consideration was the safety and it has excellent NCAP results. I do rate the car, it is quick and economical although the interior is nice to look at I think it is a bit cheap and poorly put together if I was to be honest although the later models look better.
As I said I like the car, boot not as big as I would have hoped but then again that's why the XL has come out. From my experience when things go wrong (and they have) then I've not always been happy with the customer service but that probably goes for a lot of manufacturers and it's dealers.
totally gutted when I sold mine, would have one any day of the week and twice on Sundays
only complaint with mine was the lacquer peeling on the rear alloys, buy SEAT replaced them.
Best car I'd ever owned. Went like stink, and hardly drank any derv. The 2.0 diesel its head and shoulders over the 1.9, if you can, pay the extra.

would highly recomend the altea i drive a red 1.9tdi stylance which is packed full of goodies dual climate control esp abs you name it the stylance has it diesel is powerfull very quiet once warm and very frugal i average 50 mpg and sometimes drive a bit to fast! car feels very solid ,goes round corners like its on rails very little body roll, stops when told to ,and in a straight line built on a golf chasis enough said driving seat and position is the best i have ever had 6,2,, male loads of room very safe car, alarms the lot,4 or 5 star ncap rating

bad points dashboard can squeak now and again, stereo is good but let down by bad speakers ,see previous threads, reversing can be a pig make sure you get rear reversing sensors, 120 pound extra i think they are a boon
if in doubt test drive at 3 diff dealers to get a feel for the car i think like most altea owners you will love it ,what car have a readers review section as well lots of happy punters on there as well.

With a board like this when you read it you will always find complaints about stuff but then that isn't a cross section of people that post that they don't have problems. End result is that you think there are problems when there aren't in general. Agreed the Altea does have a set of things that can go wrong and need to be fixed under warranty. Cruise control is one.
The boot is both large and small. When you get the car fully stuffed at say Xmas or coming back from a shopping trip on the continent you think it would be nice to have a bigger boot etc, but then you'd only use that twice a year say. Equally the idea of sliding rear seats, mine doesn't have, 2004, I wouldn't use them in practise since the need wouldn't be that great and stuffing boxes of chocolates and wine bottles in the rear passenger well isn't a bad place to put things so they don't get squashed.
The bucket seating are very comfortable.

Good news matey, if you can, drive the 1.9 and 2.0 back to back as you are used to a lot of grunt and the 2.0 might well be abetter bet for you. If you want stonking midrange, then a few companies can do remapping to sort that, though the 2.0 is no slouch in standard form.
Agree with Tell the DSG box is superb and very worthwhile.
Reversing sensors are a must with the Altea, blind spots and poor reversing light mean you need a little help and they work extremely well.

Well, I bought one...budget wouldnt go to the 2.0 TDI so weve got a 1.9TDI Sytlance (so all the extras)...went for a test drive with my wife and most importantly she loved it....so that will do her nicely......was very impressed with it I have to say.

ours has to go soon. But it's been fantastic.
IF Seat did a 7 seat we'd get one. But they don't.
We've driven everything MPV wise and nothing touches it.
So the only 7 seater we can contemplate getting is the Touran.
It's the Altea/Golf underneath so it's our only rationale choice.

Yeah its a shame they didnt go that extra bit with the Altea XL....what about the Allabrahma (sp!) - they not too good then or are they just pricey?

Just not the same really. I want a "drivers" car as much as possible and I don't think the Alhambra cuts it.
The Altea XL was a missed opportunity.
Or it was what the Altea should originally have been!

I would highly recommed the Altea. I had a mk 1 LCR like you and exchanged it for a 2.0TDI Sport with 17" alloys (they don't do this particular model new now). The engine is fantastic, the ride nice and firm and it is very well equipped. Only quibble is the cheap feel of the interior - not a patch on the lovely soft plastics of the LCR!! However, this does not distract too much from what is an excellent car!
