50mpg...hmmmm

It's got around 2900 miles on it now, I usually get around 500 miles to a tank of £40 with very mixed driving and several short (6 miles to work) journeys. I'm not saying that I regularly get 65.2 mpg - that was just on a 15 mile trip after filling up and only idicated on the computer.

So 500 miles, £40 of fuel at 91.9p per litre, works out at around 52.2MPG if my arithmetic serves me right. Not bad considering I drive it harder and faster than my old 20VT which when taking it very easy and doing a lot of motorway driving returned 35MPG at the best.

I got 67mpg on a motorway trip in the summer but it was hard work. Im averaging anything between 45 to 55 mpg but at this time of year the engine takes a lot longer to get to a decent running temperature and I only to short distances at the mo until I move offices in Jan.

Its not just what speed you do guys, its how you get there, if your braking your wasting energy, etc etc.

As boring as it can be, if I drive to count the mpg i'll stick to a speed to save fuel, will free wheel (in a gear, normally 5th/6th) to junctions in 40 zones etc.

I tend to increase speed before hill, and dont use the gas going up it etc etc and I can see 50mpg+ on the trip and 50mpg+ real easy if I wanted to that much. Problem is my exhaust sounds far too nice at 3,000rpm

What's the optimum intake temp. then? So weird how one day the car runs great and the next it runs like a bag of s*!$

Have the same problem with mine. Running like crap at the moment and my MPG has gone down.

Used to get about 55-60mpg doing 75mph on the motorway. Now it is more like 40-45mpg. Also seem to have lost quite a bit of pull (torque I think is the correct term?) It's still there but is taking longer. Think I may have a problem as my car has developed a "whistle" when idling - well I can only hear it when I'm idling with window down.

Any ideas what this might be. Have just done a search but can't find anything.

could be a loose boost pipe mate, or if it's coming from the nearside at the very front check the SMIC (intercooler) hose mine poped off and really whistled like leaking air, turned out to be a whole differant problem when oil was found coming down fron the turbo, hehe new one on warrenty though luckely.

normal journey for me, 45+mpg, careful one, 70+mpg.... driving to wales on boxing day with no traffic 25.5mpg :blush:

Over-fueling? I am running around that sort of power, and can get 50mpg+ on short or long journey's alike.

What 'remap' do you have?
What milage is on the car?
Checked your tyre pressure's?
Oil?

Etc?

Quite common for economy to drop at this time of year - my Ibiza did, and the Passat is doing the same (some days I struggle to get it over 41/42mpg even driving gently )

Why is it called long life oil when it gets changed every 10k???

I drive normally and travel 100 miles a day to work, 50 there and 50 back and very rarely break 50mpg.

Fixed servicing doesn't use Longlife Oil

i went for COMMA PD DIESEL oil VW 500.01 approved 5w40, but it took some finding, hellfrueds told me to just put 10w 30 in it as i couldn't put fully synthetic oil in a diesel, especially if it's only a 1.9 as it doesn't need it fot the performance

Usually Blackpool and back so an 80 mile round trip on motorway at around 75mph

Looks like you do a similar journey to me.

Getting to work I do 6 miles to the motorway (country lanes) and the next 32 on the M40, M25 and M4. Works out at 77 miles per day round trip. Rare that I get above 70mph in either direction!
Just approaching 10,000 miles and currently getting 53.5 but have been as high as 56.1.

I'm not sure that top speed is the crucial factor. How quickly you get to that speed is more important.
Use the highest gear you can and stop racing Mini Coopers at traffic lights!

Car today felt so much better. Took some stuff to the tip which is around 6 miles away along the A6 at National Speed limit. Temp outside was 11 degrees, and the car seemed to pull so much better and was returning 52mpg!
