Stereo & CD Changer Questions

I currently have my own stereo under my steering wheel, but i want to take it out.
However, i'm not sure what to do. When i had the standard stereo connected up with the standard cd changer when i first bought the car, the CD changer didn't play CD's I made myself (not MP3 before anyone asks), just normal CD's i made. But the person that owned the car before said he used to play his own CD's in it, so i don't know why i can't?

Now i'm thinking about just connecting my iPod with an FM transmitter but i've been told the quality wouldn't be very good. Has anyone else done this, and is it true?

Also, what CD changer could I put in there that would play my own CD's?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated :)

I have the fm transmitter for ipod. Works really well as long as you stay in one area.

Obvioulsly in different areas different frequency's are not used. So in one area a frequency might not be used, and will work well with ipod, but as you go into another area you may get interference.

Have a possible explanation for cd's not working. I found that if you 'closed' the cd, after writing to it, so that you couldn't add to it again it worked in cd player but if you leave them open for editing they don't.
