LCR - Noisy A/C

Guys,

I've done a quick search but can't find any info. Can someone help me please?

I've had my LCR a week now and have noticed a very obvious 'whirring' noise (kinda like a radiator fan) when the A/C is on. The noise is the same no matter how fast the airflow. When the A/C is off the 'whirring' disappears. I had an LC for 2 years before the LCR and never noticed this sound before.

Can anyone tell me if this is the norm for an LCR or do I have a problem appearing?

Thanks in advance.

I don't think so. Basically, I only hear the 'whirring' sound when the A/C is on. When the A/C is off I can have the fans on full tilt and not hear the 'whirring' sound.

Is there a 2nd fan that kicks in when the A/C is on?

There are two engine fans. One comes on when engine temp is high the other kicks in when aircon is switched on. Both switch on when the A/C setting is selected. The actual heater fan setting wont activate the engine fans.

During the summer, at its hottest, I first noticed a kind of 'water down a pipe' whirry noise from behind the dash when the a/c was on. A couple of days later it stopped blowing cold air. Took it to the dealer and they diagnosed a seal had failed allowing the gas to leak out, and the increased noise I could hear was a a result of that. Once the seal was replaced and the system re-filled, it became quiet again.

Not saying its the same thing, but might be worth getting it checked.

Thanks Neil. It does sound like a radiator fan kicking in so that must be it. Is your 2nd fan quiet nosiy as well? My LCR is still under warranty so I might get it checked out anyway.

I originally thought my power steering was the noise I could hear and after reading this thread I heard the same noise today. Turned my a/c off and it stopped! What could this be?? The whirring / vibration gets louder if I don't switch the a/c/fan off!

I'm not sure if mine gets noisier the longer I leave it on but I'll try it. I'm going to take it in under warranty after Xmas and see what the stealer says. I'll let you know the outcome.

Have you got a pic of your small plate btw?

I think I will take mine to the dealers too as it is quite a worrying noise....

Fans are not very reliable, I had both mine replaced on my Leon CR a month ago, and also had both fans replaced a couple of years ago on my S3(uses the same fans).

agree with martin, but i'd have thought if you were getting the noise then your fans are working.

Why don't you park your car, turn aircon on, pop the bonnet and track down the noise? You can also see if both engine fans are spinning, to confirm they are working.

If they pulse, rather than run constantly, then either the fans or the fan controller is knackered. Fuses are located on top of the battery.. i think its a 40A fuse IIRC.

Cheers Pabs. I'll give that a go. It'll be the first time I've lifted the bonnet since I got the car 2 weeks ago

I'm sure the fans are working but I'm not sure that the 2nd one should be quite so noisy.
