I've noticed this before, but I'd forgotten about it as it has to be quiet to hear it and I usually have my stereo on.

When crawling along in first gear - sat in traffic, clutch foot right up, and just easing the accelerator to move along. As soon as I lift off the accelerator I get this "knock" sound. No idea where it comes from or what causes it, but it only happens when I lift off the accelerator at low speed (0-10mph) and if I am completely off the clutch.

Anyone else noticed anything similar or could shed light on what it is.

omg!

I think it may have something to do with the stereo because if I turn the volume up and it magically dissapears! :)
or:
Maybe when you are applying power the transmission is 'in tension' (dont really know how to explain that properly) but when you take the power off it the tension is applied in the opposite direction, hence a light knock. I have noticed it on all my cars.
