Thoughts on this please!

Surfing at lunch and discovered this nice looking FR with low miles. What is yours thoughts, has been cat'd at early age of its life and was written off due to cost of parts and repairs.

Do you have to tell insurance and will this cost more & be harder to insure. Can cat d be removed and would you touch it in the first place?

Just be a 2nd car for the girl, then she doesnt get to abuse my leon FR!!

EBAY Item number 320052968669

Thanks in advance guys & gals!

You gotta ask yourself, why Cat D'd at an early age? Up to a year old they'd give the guy a new car at 60% of new repair cost, so thats over £6k of repairs needed - thats a fair old amount.

I'd be very wary..........

Exactly the same question on the Punto forum today...

Make sure you find out exactly what happend, what damaged and what was repaired... make sure there is no structural damage (altho I'd imagine there was) as it weakens the car..

Personally I wouldn't buy a car that has been written off and repaired.. they are generally weaker..

Any ideas on insurance etc..

No sorry.. easiest thing to do is call up some companies, don't get a quote, just ask if they would insure it..

TBH i can't see it being an issue.. it has to be tested to get the V5 cleared.. so as far as they are concerened it's a fit healty car... they will know it's been written off when they punch in the reg..

Sellers response to questios about damage..

Parts used:-
Bonnet, Bumper, Grill, Wings, Fog Lights, Rad and Headlamps.

There was no chassis, suspension or air-bag damage and it was repaired by the company who repair
all our company vans over a year ago, but I paid then cash as all they had to do was fit and paint the panels.

AS for the Cat D I declared it on my insurance with the relevant value which was no problem. Whether you declare this
or not is down to you. I don’t know if the Cat D can be removed, that is something you might have to checkout.

That said, it’s a lovely driving and loving car (top of the range) with huge power and economy. The reserve will only be known if its met
on the auction.

So, doesnt appear to be a major accident but still comes down to the trust issues of believing the seller!!

Why are the bump strips on the front bumper unpainted?

Are some FRs like this? Or did they just forget to do it during the repair job!

I wouldn't have said on a car this new, that it would be classed as a Cat D, with those sort of damages...

I've not been in an FR.. but the insides.. look like my old sport did..

Buy it now price of £6,500 is cheap.... Honestly I'd drive it before I do anything... see how it handles... I'd also test drive a new one from a dealers.. see if you can feel difference in handeling...

6.5k and you can get an older early one in resonable condition i would have thought fromt bumper wings and rad is not going to write the car off thats about 2k worth i would say
i personally wouldnt want a car that has been completely written off that has that much power, if something is not quite right it could have serious affects at some point

Many years ago I had a smash in my Citroen with an OAP who pulled out of a side road on me. At that time I couldn’t afford to loose the car, so I asked the assessor to kindly authorise repairs. That accident was a front end corner smash that needed a bonnet, door skin, wings and front end bits like rads and fans etc. What I'm trying to say is that repair cost £5.5K 8 yrs ago, so I can understand how certain accidents and damaged can push up the price of a repair to make it financially unviable to repair the car. That said I wouldn’t touch a CAT D car unless it was a cheap runaround and I was willing to take a hit at resale time.

Thanks for all the replies.
And after careful consideration and the thought of a 400 mile trip just to get to see the car, i have decided against it. Not worth the hassle and possible reprocutions!

If thats all that was needed then the car wouldnt have been written off (in my experience) while I dont want to doubt the seller but doesnt seem to add up to me.
