Mufflerectomy?

Hi, I am planning on changing the exhaust on my Mk4 Ibiza FR TDi.

Got a quotte for a custom cat back double exit (with large centre box and piped to the back) for £400. Got another quotte for half that to get the muffler removed and just piped straight through (keeping the cat).

I'm guessing the 2nd option is whats called a Mufflerectomy? I've been doing some research on this and have seen some mixed comments. Will this make my TDi sound better? how much louder will it make it?

Finally, will my car pass an MOT if I have this done?

thanks, Russell

Yes it will pass the MOT, even without the cat it should still pass...

You won't get the diesel to sound too loud, only if you have no cat and no silencers!

Mines 2.5" bore from the CAT with thne smallest silencer at the back and a 5x3" tailpipe at the end... MInes sounds just right IMHO.

Tdi only needs to pass a visible smoke test to pass an MOT and as long as the engine emissions are in range it will be fine.

Chop off the backbox and leave the cat it will sound lovely, chop out the cat and leave the backbox it will sound nice too, chop off both and replace with straight pipe and it will sound nice under load and awful at tickover ..... chop out both cat and backbox and replace the backbox with a small silencer from say powerflow with a nice finishing tip and it will sound nice too.

So in short, if you do what you planned above and simply remove the backbox leaving the cat it will sound like more than what it cost to do and it won't fail an MOT. Sound is louder but not boomy ( make sure you get the tailpipe tip extended beyond the rear valance ) overall a nice way to pretend you have a milltek on there but for powerflow prices :)

if you ask ( beat me to it :D) Sisson nicely he might post up a soundbyte from his, either him or devonutopia.

Thanks, thats pretty much what i wanted to hear!

Sisson, what is the standard bore before modifying? if you have a soundclip of you car that would be good. Think i'm gonna get rid of the backbox and leave the cat as it is.

cheers for the advice

I had the mufflerectomy with a Cupra style oval on mine, T. Spark also had one with a FR style twin, both sound great imo.

Mine is deep and raspy where as T. Sparks is a little bist higher pitched and less raspy at lower revs. Both cost about £100 for about 1m of stainless pipe fitted with a tailpipe.

The only sound clip i have was from the last Manchester meet (note on the tunnel run there are some custom exhausts + millteks, but you can only really hear mine - the first car)

Hope this helps!

standard bore is 2.25" i think, i went for 2.5" due to the higher boost pressures the car is running. also thats what bore the milltek system is

I can't stress this enough, at tickover and in traffic / around town it is NO more noisy than a stock exhaust ... but once you plant it it sounds lovely. The turbo chatter ( if that's what it is) between gears is lovely :)

I also can back this up, on tickover it sounds almost the same, minus you can hear lots more turbo whistle (on mine atleast) and when driving you wouldnt notice any difference over a std exhaust (or zorst :p) unless you give it some stick and then all hell brakes lose :D

So it's not just me that gets that turbo whistle, sounds even nicer if you lift right off the throttle between 1st and 2nd and 2nd and 3rd - don't hear it as much in the other gears.

Did you try yours with just a straight pipe from the turbo back? I stuck it out for a week but it just had to go. Sounded lovely at full chat and bl00dy awful everywhere else :)

Ohhh no, I got huge ass amounts of turbi whilst, more than any other diesel I know of around the area which is increasing buy stands at 5 cars + at the moment!

I also lift of when changing, also seems to be mostly heard in 2nd/3rd change and sounds ace!! Shhhss shhshshs shshs or something along those lines.

I didnt de-cat mine no, as I have heard mixed reviews that this can cause the turbo to over spin due to lack of back pressure (I duno!?)

And sounds ace as it is.

Cheb on here has just got his down today (I popped down to have a lookie) and he took some pictures, so im sure he will post them up soon

Hmmm i don't know about the backpressure side of things, the folks on tdiclub seem to be of the impression that the turbo itself provides back pressure - how correct that is i don't know as i'm no mechanic. I ended up fitting a small powerflow silencer in place of the OEM backbox after a week as it was just too noisy.

Like you i've NO complaints about the sound(s) :)
