i picked up my fr on friday and ws giving this guy a lift today and as ive never driven a diesel before he told me that when i start it up i shud put the ignition on 1st and wait for 1 of the yellow symbols to go off then start it up. is this correct as ive never been told this before as ive never driven a diesel.

In a word - YES!

That's the pre-heat or glowplugs - the diesel needs to be warmed before starting to help the engine. Not such a big issue on the PD engines as the glowplugs only work when the temperature is quite low.

Not being funny, but sometimes it does actually pay to read the manual.......

I agree, I told my dad off today for not doing this. You MUST wait for the symbol which looks like two swiggles to go out before starting her up.

no doubt you'll of done any damage...the spark plugs (so i'm told) just helps to heat the fuel up to get a better reaction...my dad says don't do it again! lol

Tell me if im way off the mark (cue the smart arses) but I thought recent vag and other marques, actually have the glow plugs set to preheat as soon as the central locking is disengaged for a faster startup so it feels less, erm, diesely.

i know they dont operate above 9 degrees ambient , i think the fuel system is primed on some cars when the drivers door opens

I think that is the funny whirring noise that can be heard when the drivers door is opened?

I'm new but a vRS owner - the glow plug light does not need to go out unless it's so cold the car won't start. You can't harm the car by not waiting and it's not 1943 so no need to listen to your dads - old diesel thinking is no longer correct.

You won't do any damage if you start the car before the glowplug light goes out, the only possible problem is that it might not start so easily.

But in the PD engines the glowplugs are hardly needed anyway, I only ever noticed the light on mine when it was very cold.

Ahhh thats what that is!!! I thought it was something to do with the locking system, I was just going to say that this noise happens on my petrol Ibiza, so can't be a diesels specific thing......
