Blown turbo or damaged wastegate?

Back from the dead
The other week I went into SEAT to get the car looked at as I had an error code coming up on the dash. They fitted a new MAF as they said it was logging error codes.

I cleaned the air filter the same day, and after all this work had been carried out I noticed a slight whistling noise from the engine bay on full acceleration.

I hunted for an air leak and couldn't find anything.

Anyway I set the car back to OE map and took it back to the dealers. They have taken it out for a test drive and said that they are seeing spikes of 27psi, and the whistling sounds like the turbo / wastegate may be knackered and thats why I'm seeing this level of overboost.

Does this sound feasible, and if so I take it it's going to be expensive?

The problem is that to get the car to spool properly you need 'load' i.e, on the road (difficult to stick your head under the bonnet on the road) so best bet is a rolling road IMO.

I had a boost leak for ages and could not trace it, replaced loads of bits and I was unhappy for a couple of months, lots of head scratching and no answers, only under load on an RR after paying for an hour of someones time did they find the split hose.

It may be the best way to see what is really going on

SEAT as doing some investigation today, and depending on how severe the diagnosis I will take it to Vince at Stealth to give a 2nd opinion. Car is still mighty quick so there can't be catastrophically wrong (he says with everything crossed).

Mmmm all depends on the Seat dealer and how good / thorough / experienced they are......

I was going to suggest Stealth, Vince is da man [B)] sure Revo would like any feedback too

Does sound like it could be either a duff wastegate actuator or a split actuator hose.

Just what you need when you put the car up for sale!!!

I'm whining to the Missus that we should keep the LCR as a kick about, and I'll strip the car bear of all unnecessary shyte, bung 2 recaro buckets in it and run it as a pure track day car but its not gone down too well.

Just been looking at an X reg Mk1 Golf GTi on Auto Trader as a similar project (would cost less as tax exempt and limited mileage insurance / classic ), but would want something 'interesting' to drive at the weekends as I'm sure the forthcoming motor will be as interesting to drive as watching lentils soak.

Sounds cool stripped with a cage

My leon will be up for sale soon all being well, will have an 06 passat estate and perhaps an evo 5/6 for weekends (as long as zoe agrees to flog her ka also, I reckon once she test drives an evo she will be sold, pluas they are 4 door!), depends whether I get this job offer or not. I wouldnt keep the leon for tooling about as I dont think its mechanically strong enough (k03s particularly) for trackdays and normal use unless I was to throw more money at it...

Stick your hand down the side of the turbo (follow the TIP down and there should be a 90 degree pipe coming off the housing) and look for the T3 sensor by the actuator. See if thats lose as it seems very similar to mine and the seat technician did say its not the first hes seen like it

Still nowt from SEAT, and like mentioned above, I am not convinced they will be able to replicate the fault on a static car, it will have to be rollered. Some mates of mine from Uni have just had a set of rollers fitted in their garage last week so I may whip it down to them tonight and see if they can replicate the issue.
Scotty - I'll check the T3 sensor once she's cooled down. I will try and buy a windows laptop and a vag.com cable/software as its like pissing in the wind trying to guesstimate what it might be!
I was speaking to Kev this morning and he was saying that normally aspirated would be the best way to go for a rant about track car as it means you don't get some of the turbo issues that you suffer with these K03/4's. Wondering whether I should transfer my order to an S4 and start getting used to linear n/a power into of turbo wallop. By the time I've paid to fix this maybe not!

If it is the turbo I'll be chatting up the folk on the hybrid turbo GB to see if they want to part with their K04's!!

even before you've taken it off & inspected it

But yes - I suggested to warren that a 2nd hand unit is far better than a potentially defective new unit

Well car has come back from SEAT with a 'clean bill of health'. They admit they can see it overboosting but it is posting no error codes. Fortunately it seems like the turbo / wastegate should be intact, but its off to see Vince at Stealth in Southam on Saturday morning for him to wave his magic wand over the old girl. Thanks again to Kev at Revo for his support towards trying to get a resolution of this, and to you lot for your words of advice.

Lets hope once under load on the RR the problem can be replicated

The whistling under load is pretty severe, and seems to be louder now the weather is colder so I am living in hope. I'm more than happy to spend a few quid to get it right as I'm determined to enjoy the car before / incase she has to go. From the reports of Vonce's abilities I hope he should be able to get to the bottom of it.

Till then its back to stock mode.
