hi guys,

after putting a deposit down, i'm picking up my ibiza today, only problem is, it's got a private plate on it, this plate is being put on retention, so the dealer is waiting for all the documents back from the DVLA, logbook with new plate on etc. Now, it was all submitted to the DVLA on the 1tth so could be upto another 7 days yet before all the paperwork is backl, i'm not leaving the car at the garage because i don't want people to use it to drive about it etc, my question is, am i alright to insure it under those private plates and get the garage to fill the logbook in on my behalf when it arrives, and then send it off? secondly, how do i know when the private plates are on retention and i can put the original plates back on the car and swap insurance over? cus the last thing i want, is to get pulled over in the crossover period, and the car to come up as something else because the previous owner has put them on his new car? see what i mean? thanks guys.

Insure it as the original number plate if thats what goin on to it. The police will not bother you about it. I put my private plate on all my cars and insure it with my private number. It took 8 weeks last time to get it through, just drive the car.

It may sound like a pain in the a**e but I got the docs from my dealer, went to the DVLA office and they done it there and then. Its the dealerships that they make wait for weeks for some reason. You will have to wait for your new rag document to come through but at least the car will have its correct number, tax disc and insurance. I usually change my car every 6-9 months so Ive had to do this quite a few times!!

even if you turn up now it's 7 days for a private plate

used to be immediate for all - but they make the posh ones wait now

Its 7 working days for the transfer, I made this mistake the other week when I went to collect my new tax disc!

My V5 came through about 2 weeks later :s

Why no tax? The DVLA take the tax off it after they've done the transfer!

That means they've taken it off and cashed it!
