Lambda Sensor Fault Codes

Well just scanned the car for the first time in a few weeks and low and behold I got some fault codes;

16804 - Catalyst System; Bank 1: Efficiency Below Threshold
17526 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor Heating; B1 S2: Open Circuit
17522 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor; B1 S2: Internal Resistance too High

Fault code #1 I’ve been getting since day one and have put this down to the 100 cell race CAT, as a friend’s LCR comes up with the exact same code ever since he had his system fitted.

However fault codes #2 and #3 are new ones to me, and I presume in layman terms it’s telling me I have a knackered lambda sensor. Does everyone agree? Or does someone know something that I don’t like it’ll be a loose connection somewhere? If both codes are cleared one comes back almost instantly, so I know it’s not just a glitch.

Also how do I find out whether it’s a post CAT or pre CAT sensor?

B1 S2 is post cat

take it to bits & clean the connections & the probe itself - but it's likely it's buggered.

My Leon Cupra's in the garage today for faults 2 & 3 on you list so I'll let you know what fixed it.

I've had similar errors in the past and the previous dealer supposedly swapped o2 (pre and post cat ) sensors and a MAF replaced, the faults went for 12 months and now they're back :cry:

I thought the idea of getting the 100cell cat rather than decat is so it keeps all the sensors happy???

Fault Code #1 doesnt throw an engine light, and doesnt appear straight away it's when the car's been driven hard does it come back. But this could have also been due to a slowly dying Lambda.

to get rid of 16804 - Catalyst System; Bank 1: Efficiency Below Threshold buy one of these spark plug non foulers to gap the probe (this is what i have done!)... http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2657329 and look here http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1366095

if you have revo/apr stage 2 map then it ignores certain things from the rear lambda and you wont get the first fault code... (i.e. dont bother with gapping the rear lambda!)

this code isnt very important, its just telling you that too much air is flowing through the CAT... due to the DP/sports CAT!


i would try gapping first and while your at it clean the rear probe... otherwise its a nackered probe!

Yeh, the plan was to gap the probe at some point to stop the code, so whilst I'm at it i'll be doing that.

If you map for a de-cat to they write out the rear sensor, or just let it throw up codes?

the easiest thing to do for a de cat is to gap the rear probe, otherwise it will see far too much carbon etc... i would guess gaping the probe for a de cat will work to trick the ecu into not throwing up a code or CEL!

i know it works for sports cats, worth a try for a decat!


otherwise the only other option i can think off is to adjust the adaption values or turn that part of the rear lambda off (like wat revo/apr do with stage 2)

mike at jabba told me he could do this but it would take a long time as the car would need to be on the rollers and he would have to find the rear lambda sensor in the map.... all double dutch to me m8! :lol: (and i dont know if this is true! :shrug: )


but as said gapping works for sports cats! :)

Mork is right, post cat lambda sensor . i had this fault code 17526. it could be connection like mork said but probably shagged like mine was. ive replaced mine and it cleared the fault:) and its nothing to do with 100cell race cat as i have blueflame one:p

oh if u want a it cheaper than the dealer ring up andrew page i would say;) the bosch part number on my old one is 258 006 213/214 but mine is AQX engine code.... yours might be different

Mines AQX too...! :D Will phone around tomorrow for it, just ordered my window runners / motor after that failed. Spending more £££ running and maintaining than modifying at the moment.

i also have the full BF system (100cell CAT) and i got this code (16804 - Catalyst System; Bank 1: Efficiency Below Threshold) and it was NOT due to a dodgy rear lambda... lots of ppl get this code due to an after market DP/sport CAT being fitted!

my point is i gapped the the rear lambda and it sorted it! :)

therefore craig should spend about £10 and gap the rear sensor before spending a lot more on a new one! (IMHO!) and if gapping doesnt work then at least the new rear probe will be gapped which should stop future fault codes due to his exhaust/map...

Dont leons use different lambda sensors.... wide band or is it narrow cant remember lol, well ive got blueflame on my ibiza and not had that fault code only the 17526 and a new sensor sorted it:)
