Tyre wear

I have had my LCR for about a month or so and I noticed after a week, that the front tyres are looking bald, almost like slicks. I spoke to the dealer about it and after they took it in the bay to have a look, he summised that there is plenty of wear on them and that I shouldn't worry, the wear indicators are well within the legal requirement. He claimed that it was because the tyres had been over-inflated, as the wear is only in the centre of the tyre. He said that it was possibly done on the checks, prior to me collecting the car.
Now I know a bald tyre when I see one and these puppies are as bald as eggs!

For one, I am worried about the safety of the front end, should I hit a patch of something slippery, and for two, I am concerned about the legal implications if I get picked up by the fuzz (metaphorically speaking).

Anyone have any nuggets of wisdom on this?

I take it they are the Pirellis?

Common characteristic.

It might be to do with them expanding in the centre at high speed and/or accelerating and wearing down more in the centre,

Get rid of the Pirellis, they're less than good - the difference on other tyres, spesh in the wet is amazing. GSD3s or Dunlop Sportmaxx are good choices

I had the same problem with my Pirellis and they were never over inflated as I have had the car from new and regularly check pressures.
Mine went like slicks in a band about 2 inches wide round the centre of the tyre whilst the rest of the tyre looked fine. They behaved like slicks too! Which is why I changed them the day after taking a roundabout in the rain and I felt the front end go. GSD3s from now on for me! They are excellent tyres.

I believe some tyre dealers are doing a 20% off deal on Goodyear at the moment. I have had GSD3's on my LC from day one and am having four more fitted tomorrow. £348.66 all in.

I'd be wary of driving with low treads this weather, slippy roads and little tread and all that.....

I agree. None of my tyres are on the markers (car passed MOT today and no advisory comments were made regarding the tyres), but they are low enough to make the car feel a little skittish, hence why I'm getting new ones fitted tomorrow.

I have had the rears on for two years (26,000 miles) and the fronts on for a year (14,000 miles).

Had them checked by a local tyre place and they have confirmed that the tyres are above board and are legal.
I questioned the lack of tread pattern on the rubber between the treads and he said that it's perfectly normal and nothing to worry about.

Yes, but he doesn't have to drive it!
Mine were also legal, but the bit in the middle of the tyre which had no tread on it didn't give enough grip in the wet. It was fine in the dry of course but I guess its about a third of the width of the tread which is smooth so I imagine that's about a third less grip, but I am not a techie so I may be wrong. All I know is that the car grips 100% better after changing the tyres and I don't get that little knot in the stomach when the front doesn't go where I want it to go.
