not a seat so apologies in advance read on you'll understand - i hope

normal turbo cars come with a puny intercooler to say the least and when tuned up a bit we could all agree a decent FMIC is the way to go to counteract higher inlet temperatures but thats on a car with the turbo hidden by the bulkhead in a closed engine bay running high boost

so if we say you had a turbo that was in a fully open engine bay free to the air with no bonnet would you actually need an intercooler ?? and i mean fully open like this

34rster.jpg

i have heard of it done and when upgraded to larger turbo's and boost levels they have added water injection

having drawn out all the manifolds etc and plans i suddenly thought do i really need an intercooler ????

what do ya reckon

An IC will provide a wider area for heat transfer, so I presume that an IC will have it's benefits on any turbo engine. But I think you can only use WI to lower intake temps.

The fully open engine bay only would let the air cool down the turbo itself, and the intake pipe/mani. Not so sure about heat transfer eficiency compared to IC.

Then again, in drag racing, is it worth to get an IC for the 1/4 mile run ?

what level of boost (compression?)-not much then not much compression so less heat.
WI can deal with a level of induction temp.

eg.. my current >2bar boost level blisters the silver ally paint off my pre-intercooler pipework!

Iwould have thought so, more related to compression than turbo heat transfer

1.5 bar tops to start at the max really as pistons are a bit of a bug bear to get right now and will have to be made or modified - so gently does it

but it will be a daily road driver not a drag stripper - cant have a v8 twin turbo and not take it to work every day can ya ?

measured up the grill and radiator and looks like i have enough room for a std ibiza size IC so ill use that or similar anyway and with open bay should help especially as its mainly grunt - not exactly a revving screamer

You can run without an intercooler on pump fuel and sensible compression ratios at say 5 PSI. With a big V8 this could work nicely.

If you run it off methanol, you can run big boost without an intercooler.

If packaging is tricky, consider a water:air rather than air:air intercooler.

was considering water injection as a back up if temps started to rocket as i turn it up

methanol ? lol would love too but shell dont do it yet and the MOT guy would probably faint

packaging is no problem - as long as it looks good [B)]

if 1.5bar then you will deffo want some intercooling m8

WI with water/meth mix will combat some of it, but I cant see it coping tbh

found a nice spot in the grille for a cooler so plan B in action and will be cooled anyway now

as a bonus for the first running with just the injection (megasquirt non turbo) its as good as a tunnel ram too :)

Call me a pr*ck if i've read wrong but... a daily drive with no bonnet?????? Are you serious???

I also think that fitting an IC is way simpler than WI [???]

Then, now that I think about it,,, what ya workin on daz?
must admit agree there - plan is clean simple and hidden even with injection and coil packs (few tricks up my sleeve) so the less wiring and sensors etc the better really - and safer with an IC for sure and i've found a good way to hide it from obvious view and will be approx room for one about 1.5 times the size of a std ibiza 3 with option for larger - but then it is technically 2x 2.0litres so may just add a laguna type FMIC in front of the rad to overkill for options later

lol i promise i wont say it - yes a daily driver (more or less) i believe in driving cars not trailers and show queens and yes no bonnet and yes no sides too - open engine bay imagine a mix of these 2 but gunmetal and red and fatter tyres

cold air from front straight to the filter - is that a scooby i guess ?

running 8 injectors too or is that giggle gas ?

the turbo/pipe coated like this would just finish it off :)

i do like a well thought out tidy engine bay - respect

It is indeed Andy Forrest's Scooby.

9.3 sec 1/4 mile now.

Think he is aiming to break into the 8's at the Pod this weekend (Japshow Finale)

8 injectors + 50bhp NOS I think he has. Maybe he didn't have it plumbed in on the day of that pic.

Yeah rite, wot's the point in having a car you can't drive, but how is this legal???? I thought things like side exit exhausts are illegal in this country????

So an open engine can't be too legal???

Wish i could of made it to the pod. I was seriously disappointed with USC this event looked wicked.
