Anyone done it? Im looking at getting a GPS camera locator and have thought it would be far nicer not to have the ash tray open and a big wire running up the front of the dash. I was thinking about getting onto the back of the cig.lighter and running a wire up the back and through the top dash vent?

Common source is from the termination block that's under the steering wheel, you can get a permanent and a ignition switched live under there.

You can then come up to the top of the dash either to the right of the right centre vent (if that makes any sense), or up the back of the fuse box at the bottom of the A pillar.

Have you done this then?

Yep. Well, I've connected to the terminal block, and I have run wires up onto the dashboard, but not actually 12v onto the dashboard...

Actually I've wired (via an inline fuse) a 4 way cigarette lighter block into the switched live and I run my PDA/Phone/TomTom, BT GPS, BT Headset Charger and occasionally the Kids DVD player off it.

None of these devices is actually 12v, most are 5v and have voltage reduction stuff in the plug end of the cigarette lighter lead.

There's a very good write up on www.icecavern.com on how to get to the terminal block and what to connect to for switched live and earth.
