Well I've had the car for 3 months now with no trouble. But saturday afternoon the temp warning light came on. So I checked the water level and it was fine. I put the heating on full hot but only got cold air out, so I'm now thinking that the thrmostat is at fault. So the 2 things I would like to know are where is the thrmostat and 2 how easy is it to replace. oh and another how much for a new one.

If you have no hot air, it would suggest to me that the hot water is not getting distributed round the heater matrix. it could be your water pump and therefore your cooling system has a prob. Dont let the car heat up to much or you will have other issues to deal with.

does the warning light come on everytime you use the car now?

I am sure someone else will be a long shortly with other suggestions:)

(BTW a new pump was about £30, after exchange and it was metal) i did change my temperature sender when my in car gauge played up....that was about £20

well the pros looked and said it was the head gaskit. Got some quotes ranging from £350 up to £500 +vat, and then some places would not even quote on it :( . So long story short found a place that said they would do it. But said they thought it was the water pump. Next day got a txt from them saying Job Done. Turns out it was the water pump and only cost £250 including a new cam kit, and all parts are seat. I'm not sure if I can put the details of this wonderful garage online. But if anyone wonts there details pm me and I'll send them to you. By the way I'm in the Staff's Derbyshire are. :D :D

Sounds like Sam ought to be a mechanic there as she got it spot on!;)
I don't see any problem with you naming a garage you feel you got good service from, plenty of others do on here (assuming you don't work for them and you are just posting to boost sales!).

It's generally understood that many people have both positive and negative experiences even of the same garage. However, it helps to build a picture if you consistently get people saying "yes, I've used them they were honest and did the job well".

...moments later, it was like being next to a steam train...

Well blow me down with a feather!! If my motor isn't doing the same thing....

Warning light comes on but temperature doesn't rise until I pull up at a junction. A couple of plumes of white smoke/steam appear. No hot air from the heater.

I have had a quick look under the bonnet and noticed the water was empty!!! Waited a short time and filled it back up. After hearing lots of gurggling I can see a puddle appearing on the floor.

I am guessing a split hose??? any ideas anyone?

Cheers

could be,

on my clio when the water pump had gone it had a small hole that leaked the water out to tell you it was knackered, not sure on the vag range if its the same

.

Hahahaha i love tinkering with cars......deffo worth it so you avoid costly bills for work that really doesnt need doing. (have been ripped off in the past......

Farkuen: glad you got it sorted mate. £250 is a pretty good price for both cam belt kit and pump plus fitting!
Deffo name the garage if your happy with the service.......its always good to know a respectable garage!;)

StuC: re fill it and try see where the water is leaking from. could be a split hose, hole in radiator or a blown gasket somewhere on the cooling system. hope you get it sorted.:)

Hi
Can anyone advise me in what the problem could be, I have had a seat leon cupra(180bhp) for 2 months. This morning the car overheated,I cant work out what the problem is.Have checked the water and there is plenty and I dont seem to be loosing water, worried it might be the head gasket!!.the cars temperature rises steadily when i accelerate, however when I drive slow and steady the temperatur stays where it should.on idle the car temperature stays normal as well.its only when I accelerate the temperature begins to increase.Any one have any ideas what it could be would realy appreciate it.thanks

This sounds like the water pump. Plastic impeller blades cracking off, resulting in a lack of water circulation. If you don't get it fixed it will blow the head gasket.

Water pump replacement requires the cambelt to be removed, so it is usual to change both at the same time. Be sure to get a metal - bladed replacement water pump.

In general: temperature warning light + no heat from the cabin heater = very low water level (not enough to fill the heater matrix) so Stop Now and Fill It Up! Then find out what's wrong - split hose or something worse. May need towing home if it won't hold water. Cheaper than blowing the head gasket, though.
