1.4 Sport (2002) - 100bhp???

Apologies if it has been answered before but I could find the answer when I searched.

I'm hoping someone on here can clarify what bhp 1400 Ibiza we have (albeit only for another week before we get an FR model!)

My girlfriend has a 1400 Sport, 52 plate (2002) model. I was under the impression that these were the 100bhp 1.4 16v unit, later replaced for a period with the 2.0. I do know that the later 1.4 sport models (04/05 time) had the 75 bhp version.

However 2 sales guys at a SEAT dealership are insisting that this isn't the case and it would be a 75bhp 1.4. Unfortunately the service side wasn't open to confirm either. - I argued the point for a while but when the 2nd guy said the same I decided to shut up just in case! - Am I wrong or are these '5 yr long serving' sales guys wrong??

Is there a code anywhere on the car which will confirm which spec engine is fitted? - the manual has both engines listed and doesn't state any engine codes.

Dont know about a code, but how dont u know wot u bought!? Either way, does it rev to like a 8k? Im sure the 100ps model revs more than the 75PS.

engine code on top of the cam belt cover will tell you exactly what engine you have and with that its easy to know what bhp it is

you may also find the same code on the logbook/registration document

to confirm any 1.4 you may have

AKK (08/99-05/02) 60hp
AUA (06/00-05/02) 75hp (16v)
AUB (07/00-05/02) 100hp (16v)
AUD (06/00-05/02) 60hp

mk4 shape

AMF (05/02-04/04) 75hp (3cyl)
AUB (09/01-05/02) 100hp (16v)
BBY (01/02-04/04) 75hp (16v)
BBZ (04/02-04/04) 100hp (16v)
BKY (05/04- ) 75hp (16v auto)

The red line starts at 6500rpm with the max showing as 8000rpm.

The car was second hand when we bought it, and I'm sure at the time it was said to be the more powerful of the two 1.4's. Nowhere on the invoice does it say what power engine it is only that the engine no. is BBZ035629.

The whole issue was only brought up cos my girlfriends brother is buying one of the DAB models which has the 100bhp engine. - He wasn't able to test drive one and said that he'd already driven my girlfriends sport so knows what the engine is like. It was when the sales guy said that would be a 75bhp model that I'm trying to prove otherwise.

8k redline its definately 16valves, salesmen know jack about the cars, just about how to take money off people. If they had been feeling really clever i'm sure they could have banged your registration number into their PC and found out. Also a 16v Engine looks noticeable different to an 8v

Basically they were trying to get you to think it was a 75PS model, and then give u less for it!

Id go to the sales manager and have ago!

I thought both of the 1.4 fitted to the Ibiza were 16v anyway, so there would be no obvious differences by looking at the engine itself.

They did say they could find out on the pc what spec it was - however it would cost them £15 to do so and unless we were to do the part ex with them wasn't worth doing (not surprisingly we went to another SEAT dealer!).

I do think the way the model line up was done and because the 1400 Sport was a short lived thing, later replaced with a 2 litre, then a year or so later fitted with a 75bhp 1400 it does get a little confusing.

Can anyone say me what is the mechanical difference between the 1.4 75 and the 100bhp engine, is it possible to convert a 75 to be a 100bhp?

Ah got you - no stopping me now!!

Its my girlfriends car, we pick it up on Friday. (Face lift model, yes) - She wanted something a little quicker than her 1.4 sport so she's having the petrol FR in black magic along with a few 'cosmetic extras' fitted. Must admit it looks good, I've got some pictures in its delivery state but not sure yet how to attach them!

I'm also picking mine up the same day - I'm having an FR Leon TDI in Luna Grey with the 18's and a few extras fitted. - Its the girlfriends fault for me swapping my current MK1 Leon FR TDI (with Cupra R bodykit) after only 8 months! - In fairness they gave me the same money as what I paid for it 8 months ago so I thought it would be rude not to!!

I'm actually South Cheshire/North Stoke on Trent so it isn't as far south.

Would have been interesting to see a drag race between a 150 petrol FR Ibiza and 150 diesel FR Leon!

As for meets, linlcoln normally hold a few, sheffield the odd one now-a-days, and manchester aswell (all close by to us)

Keep ya eyes peeled for any, very few MK2 Leon FR's about, so urs will stand out

Both good choices of cars there mate. Surprised but you went for the petrol Ibiza FR as everyone seems to love diesel these days. However you cant beat the noise of a good petrol engine at full chat!

Hope they are both good too!! - went for the petrol Ibiza as she doesn't do the mileage and she thought the diesel seemed a little noisy - think like you say it should sound ok when you put your foot down!!

Me personally prefer the diesel, you can have fun without visiting the pumps too often (must be getting old!!)
