Hey everyone, iv been broswing these forums lately and today, finally, i ventured my way down to Cardiff to look at buying a new car. A clue as to which ones can be seen in the title:lol:.

Anyway, im going to try and summarise so please feel free to comment.

Fiesta Zetec S

First impressions were that it was a fantastic looking car, nice alloys, big roof spoiler and side skirts (which are important when your 19:)). Dealer said they retail for about £13,000 new which i thought was exceptionally reasonable.

There was a 2nd hand one on the forecourt, 59 plate with 4,000 miles on the clock selling for £10,999. I took it out on a test drive and i was a little dissapointed, i thought the rear of the cabin was very small, also as a 6ft, a little on the chunky side male ;) i was not 100% comfortable, seats were too hard, small and the driving position was not great. In terms of performance, it was ok, not particularly fast - nothing special. Also the steering was light - something which i am not a great fan of.

Pro's - Great looking car, cheap to purchase,
Con's - Small cabin, stiff ride, not great steering, will loose all value within 3/4 years.

Fiat Punto Abarth Essesse

I wasn't originally going to look at the punto, but thought why not. Walked into the showroom and it was a real head turner. Red with black alloys, absolutley stunning car. Got inside, and even better, i actually felt like a fighter pilot inside with all the switches. There wasn't one there to test drive so im going back on Tuesday to try one out.

Pro's - Amazing looking car inside and out,
Con's - Most expensive of all three, costs most to insure of all three, in three/four years i may look a little silly with stickers plastered all over the car (personal opinion).

Seat Ibiza Cupra

Walked into the showroom where there was not one on display, but there was one in their lockup which had already been bought by a customer (in the spec i want funnily enough). Great looking car, classier look than the punto. Unfortunatly dealer could not let me sit in it as keys were locked in the lockup where nobody was working today. He also said his area manager was coming down next week and he would ask him to source one for me to test drive within the next two weeks.

He also mentioned that there was a speed blue cupra within the country without the options that i want, which i could have within two weeks if i wished. The first figure he gave with 1/2 VAT was £16,300 - which is not a bad starting point

Pro's - Great looking car, fastest of all three, cheapest of all three to insure
Con's - Long waiting list, not as sporty looking as the punto

I think overall now its clear im going to be going for the Cupra. The only problem being that do i go for the car which is availible within two weeks and potentially be dissapointed with the spec, or do i wait till around April / May for a spec which is the one i want...

A long read i know, but somebody somewhere may find it interesting/handy :)

i would definatly get a boca if i could, it poses the same problem as the abarth though

Cupra - £890 fully comp insurance
Boca - £1980 fully comp insurance

Cupra performance wise is level with the boc, so apart from the styling i wont be missing much

The boca is just like the leon K1. its a body kit on top of a normal cupra, that no doubt all the TDI drivers will have their cars looking like in time.

On pure performance i would go for the Cupra, however, the Fiesta seems to be a better quality car. I personally would not own a Fiat simply based on their poor record for reliability and quality. If it was me i would pick the Cupra out of those cars, but the quality and refinement would not be as good as the Fiesta - i suppose there is a compromise to be made whatever car you choose.

is that cheapest quote you can get? £2k seems a bit excessive....

yes unfortunatly, 19 year old with 2 years driving experience and 0 ncb :( think the cupra is a mistake on the insurance companies computers....

that was the one offputting thing about the fiat the reliability, fiesta was well built but so uncomfortable i thought...

im a ford fan through and through. but that fiesta is too underpowered. if they went for a 1.6Turbo so its tunable then i reckon it would be excellent, especially with the mountune package.

@ the OP have you considered a renaultsport clio 197 or 200?

I've been in a Fiesta Zetec and have to say I know exactly what you mean about the seats! They're the same in the back! Honestly, sitting in a nettle bush would be about as comfortable. I would have to rule the car out personally as I couldn't put up with seats like that for years.

Have you considered a Fiat 500 Abarth? Or are they too expensive or something... I've no idea whether or not they are the same sort of money. Personally I think they look a lot better than the Punto Abarth.

Also, I've quite a lot of family who have had more modern Fiats, and the reliability is a lot better than it used to be. I'd say they're no less reliable than most competitors these days. That said, I have found Fiat dealers are an absolute nightmare to deal with!

For me the Ibiza wins of the 3 you have mentioned but if you added the 500 Abarth I'd be very tempted by one. They look fab.

i havn't looked at a renaultsport clio as the insurance for me would be totally unaffordable and iv currently got a 1.2 clio, so im looking for a change :)

Also i havn't considered an 500 abarth, i know two girls who own them and they are great little cars, but i think their a little on the small size for me. Also i want something a little bigger than a 500 abarth

get a fabia vRS. Cheaper again than the cupra. ive just bought mine spankers for £13400 in candy white with cruise, parking sensors and black alloys. same engine/chassis/DSG as the cupra. The vRS is not quite as good looking but still quite quirky with it. I actually prefer the under card.

Also id add, and alot on here would agree. seat aftersales and dealerships leave alittle bit to be desired. Skoda on the other hand give excellent aftersales customer care.

Fiat I would stay away from, same as alfa. Ford, well put together but sadly yes, very uncomfortable. Abarth is ok but way over priced. Which leaves the cupra. Alot rarer on the road than any of the others, great insurance and goes like stink!

i shall look into the skoda over the next couple of days, i hadn't thought of that as an alternative

Agreed, it is an amazing looking car though, it is more in your face than the cupra which is more refined i think style wise.

Alot rarer on the road than any of the others

This is a major selling point of the car to me.

I am 19 also and have a Cupra insured for just under £1000, which i thought is very good considering my last car which was a 1.6 Golf £1200 to insure!

Go for the cupra i can garentee you will fall in love with it! I personally would not go for the Fiat and the Fiesta, although a very good looking car IMO, still seems underpowered. But then again we are all going to be biasd as we all have Ibiza's :p

How do you get a Cupra at just under £1000!? I get a 1.2 at £880!

These are my personal opinons on this subject:

Abarth punto/500- too loud and stand out like a sore thumb.
Fiesta- underpowered

Renaultsport Clio- stupidly expensive to insure and to run, not to mention the tax and the actual cost of the car to start with

Seat Cupra/boc- this has a somewhat subtle presence on the road, its very under-stimated, it seems to be a normal car until you unleash whats under the bonnet. REVO will help too if you fancy a little more !!!... personally i believe the cupra/boc are cracking little cars... yeah there are some people on here who have had problems but its been mentioned before, people only discuss problems on here not the good.

They must just like me :) Im not sure really, you should get a quote for one just to see how much it would be. Im sure people have said that the Cupra is actually cheaper to insure than the FR despite having more power! :S

if you need understated, you need a fabia vRS. beat someone in a cupra they will accept it. beat them in a skoda it'll upset them.

A guy in work was devastated when his new Focus RS coulnt get a way from my stage 2+ octavia vRS. pissed him off even more when i lied and said it was only 260hp lol

nobody expects a skoda to be quick

Just had a quick scan of the Fabia VRS, the styling isn't my cup of tea, looks a little too square for my liking...

this is the case for me, with admiral its £1500 for an Fr, and £890 for a Cupra....
