WTF is it? random in car LCR doohickey

heres some pics of a random device hanging down under my steering column,
its a small press button switch with 5 red led lights on it, connected by a ribbon cable that runs behind the centre console.


anyone know wtf it is? or even better what it does?

i reckon it would have sommin to do with an aftermarket immobiliser or alarm fitted. maybe you would press in a combination when the alarm goes off.. or to remove the dead lock if the batt dies in key fob? have you owned car since new?
