Hi Guys,

Just wondering what everyone thinks - I was looking at a 1.9tdi stylance 2008 leon today, its done 32,000 miles was first registered in April 2008, i looks like a nice clean car interior spottless and no real bodywork probs few paint chips to door edges from being opened agains walls etc. starts fine runs smooth and drives fine.

it was previously owned and operated by ryan investments ltd who are hertz rent a car.

I am happy with the price, just want to know what people think of buying a rental car am i mad?

tks

depends on the price

tdis cant be beaten down like a petrol so i'd say depends on teh money

when i had company cars my last was a skoda octavia elegance and from 7 miles (delivery) to 105k (about a year!!) i thrashed it every single mile, it was usually top end on cruse control for alot of it, the A11 goin onto the m11 it was always top ended every single day but after all that it still ran minter than mint and never had anything go wrong or need changing cept the bits i broke jumping bridges on the fens
before that my superb elegance only needed an alternator at 132k otherwise nothin ever bar servicing which was almost bi monthly and i fulled with fuel every other day

no rental will have taken the abuse mine did, i tried to kill it constantly as i would have been given a new un in a better colour! (ie not gold) i got a new car every year! all went back with over 100k but i bet ended up on forecourts with under 20k on the dials

In front of a PC....
I would run away my friend. Having worked for another Car Rental company I would never ever buy a car that was 12 months old that had 14K on the clock as I know they would have been ex hire or ex sales cars and they would have been ragged to within an inch of their lives.

Don't bother mate, that motor would have had some serious abuse!! Everybody loves a hire-car, rag it and give it back, it ain't yours and who cares sort of mentality, I wouldn't even consider it.

Something like the 1.9 isn't lightening quick, so it will have been thrashed... You only have to look at the chips on the door to know how people have treated it.

I'd walk away if i were you.

I bought an ex rent a car but it was sold to GK group when 6 months old and only had 6K on it, I bought it off them 12 months old with 9K on it. Had it a year with no issues.

Before that I bought a Focus which was 10 months old with 21K on it, ran it for 4 years and again had zero issues.

With that said I would think twice about what you are talking about although it has 14 months warranty which gives plenty of time for issues to be found/resolved.

According to parkers my car is worth more now that when I bought it 13 months ago.

The two rules.

1) Never buy a rental car
2) Never buy a car used by a driving instructor, e.g. A corsa which is ex-BSM

One of the 20 things to do before you die, is to destroy a rental car - I think most of us have ragged a rental car at one point or another!

It wouldn't put me off most of the used stock has to come from somewhere.it's like buying an exfleet car....rental cars spend most of there times out on the road running at motorway speeds not short journeys like most used cars. My cupra was an ex seat car do that means it was either an ex demo or managment car. It certainly wouldn't put me off if the car and price were right

Ex SEAT UK cars are not all ex rentals.... SEAT/VW staff have the option to lease a car for 9 months/9,000miles to provide a healthy supply of 2nd hand cars to market.

Ex rental cars that are 2.5yrs old will have had hell kicked out of them. I know this because it's what I do. Same for ex-fleet pool cars.

enterprise change cars at 4k!! a great deal of cars are ex rentals

why do they do this? they get cars for less than dealers pay! but cant sell them before they hit 4k
when they resell them they make a profit on every single car sometimes a very big profit (the guy who resells them gets all sorts of perks from his customers )

rental is only the face of the business, im ex ford main dealer and we did the same but on a smaller scale
i bet a 1/3 of cars are lease or rental, they go thru the auctions and dealers buy them and punt them out

lol, Avis sure don't change at 4k... the number of those with monster miles on an 07 plate I've had recently.

And not all enterprise cars get done then

Either way... I wouldn't buy one

Agreed with Mork on this one. I have seen a few that were 07, 57, 08 and 58 plates that have been kicking around too but hopefully that will be thinned down soon.

Just 'cos they are VAG staff doesn't mean they will look after them
Free/subsidised car = don't give a ****!

That doesn't mean they are not worth buying though. Both my current and previous cars were ex Manufacturer registered cars.

It's just a choice of new and pay premium or a year old and save a third off the new price!! It's a no brainer for me
