Hey Guys,

Got a bit of a Wheel Wobble at the moment on my Cupra TDI. Had a bit of a wobble for about a month now, so last weekend i had look at my tyres and noticed that the drivers side tyre was illegal on the inside edge and the passenger side was going on the outside edge. So this weekend i went to my local tyre place and had 2 brand new conti's fitted, balanced and also the tracking done.

Came out and it felt really good until i went over 50mph, then the shaking started, before the new tyres it was happening around 70mph. It is now worst than before. I have done a bit of searching on the forum and seen the following reason;

1. Bushes gone
2. Buckle/Dent in wheel (Small dent in one of mine)

I'm goin to get my bushes looked at this week, but i was just wondering if anyone else had any ideas that i could consider!

All suggestions and help welcome!!

Thanks

Get the wheel balance rechecked.

Also look at the weights they have used and more importantly how many, if theirs weights everywhere then that can cause it, also if they have put a lot in one place to get it to balance (maybe more than 60-70g)

Thanks MarkyBoyt. I think that's what i'm going to do, go somewhere else and get the wheels re balanced and the tracking re-done before i take it to the local garage form the to have a look at the bushes and the wheel bearings!!

Get them to check the track rod ends too, some tyre places will adjust tracking to account for the wear in them but when you're out on the road they're still flapping about all over the place.

Update:

Didn't manage to get to a different tyre place today, but i did have a look at the tyres and alloys and found something interesting!! Both alloys which had the new tyres on havent got any balancing weights on them at all!!! i know sometimes this does happen, but does it happen to 2 alloys that both had weights on before??????

Highly unlikely. did you check for both kinds of weights? stick ons and knock ons?

If you have neither then take it back and suggest that a key part of balancing the wheels is balancing the wheels.

This sounds pretty obvious but you are checking the inside of the wheel rather than the outside rim for the balance weights right?

Update No.2:

The most rcent updat and the final one i'm hoping!! Tursday, went back to the original garage where they tyres had been put on and told them the problem. It turns out that they had balanced them wrong!! Driveres side was 55 out and passenger side 25 out, with weights that they had originally but on!!! :censored:

Went away Thursday, thinking it was all fine!! Driving to work on Friday and it was back, probably worse than ever!! So i decide to tak it to my mates garage for them to have a look! They put it up on the ramp and checked everything, bearings, bushes, shocks, alloys and tyres. they found nothing!! He suggested to take it to a Kwik Fit or ATS and ask them to check the balancing and tracking for me.

Went to Kwik Fit today and had them to have alook at it. After the wheel being re-balanced on Thursday, the drivers side was 55 out with weights on and passenger side was 25 out withweights on!! so they done that for me and checked tracking which was out as well, not a happy chap!!

So now you have had my life story, lol!! It will be a short sharpe phone call to the original place on Monday morning telling them what i thing of them and staying away in the future!!

Cheers for the help Fellas!!!

Well I opened my mouth to soon . . . it not sorted and it has become really frustrating now!! i have had the Wheels balanced and tracked by 4 different people including SEAT and Kwikfit and the i still have the same problem.

It went to seat last week and they "looked" at it and found that the wheels needed balancing and to be honest i started to laughing when they told me. They said that they could find anythig else wrong with it, told me to see what happens and charged me an arm and a leg for it.

I really want to make a complaint to SEAT about the whole situation if i'm honest as the car is under 5 yeas old, done less than 45,000 miles and when you go over 60 miles an hour (less at times) the steering wheel is dancing around in your hands. I did think it was me at times but i have had other people drive my car and said something isn't right, including SEAT!!

Has anyone got any advice on what ishould do next??

Thanks Guys!!

ok, easy stuff first.
How many balance weights are on your wheels and what is the total weight on each wheel?
Are the weights in one place on the inside and one place on the outside?

Hard for it to be balance after getting it done at so many places admittedly.

I take it they have checked all suspension and steering joints and bushes for you.

what are the rear tyres like? run your hand over the tread backwards and see if it catches your hand much, that can cause it.
Would actually be worth swapping your wheels front to back or if you know somebody else with suitable wheels seeing if you can do a swap for a test.

does the judder come purely throught the steering or through the body of the car via your seat?

Sorry Mark i should have said . . .

There wheels have bee swapped rears on to fronts and fronts on to rears. The wheels have been balanced 4 times in about 5 - 6 weeks, they were originally done when i had to new tyres at the end of January. The shaking problem was alreay thereprior to the new tyres were put on and due to the tryes been badley worn it wasn't as noticeable.

I haven't rubbed my hands over the tyres, what should i be looking for there?

The judder seems to come purely from the steering wheel and it's strong enough to shake my arm.

SEAT and a local garage (Good one) have been through the suspension and the bushes and have both said that they can not find anything wrong there. I would assume that the steering joints would be included in that check!

sometimes tyres can wear high-low and you feel the tyre catch your hand as you move it over in one direction as the sections of the tread are angled, obviously if this is affecting your front wheels and with the new tyres on then I would imagine this would not be the case.

The amount of weight can still be an indicator and is worth checking.

do you hear any rotational noises when driving the car as if something is moving about (think like the washing machine noise) and gets faster as the vehicle goes faster?

Also when your driving it and the wheel is shaking, what happens when you brake quite lightly? also try that at 30-40 too. I wouldnt think its from the brakes but again is worth checking.
