i've now been defeated by my knackered leccy windows - the're all fully open and i can't close them.
I've checked the fuse - it's ok, i've got the panel off and all the wirings ok, the motors click
but the windows don't move

is there any other way of putting the windows up?

I disconnected the battery earth lead before i removed the dash clocks (to fit some alloy surrounds which turned out to be too big) - when i reconnected the lead i wanted to make sure the electrics were still ok.
I used the key in drivers door to check both the locking and windows roll down feature at the same time, the windows came down but now wont go back up (either with door lock or switches), i can hear each of the motors clicking when i use the switches but nothing moves?

have you tried using the switches to wind the window down although it's down already and then up. Maybe the down signal needs setting before they come up? weird.

Have a read of this (especially the last paragraph or two)

Door windows
Electric window regulator with convenience system (automatic opening and closing) with excess force limitation (roll-back)
With the introduction of the convenience system electric windows, the window regulators are additionally equipped with automatic opening and closing features.

The switch for the front window automatic opening and closing functions is located in the driver's door controls. The switch for the driver's and front passenger's door is equipped with a two level function.

If the relevant switch is pushed or pulled onto the first detent the front windows open or close as long as the switch is being operated.

If the switch is briefly pressed or pulled onto the 2nd detent the front windows will open or close automatically.

There are also additional switches in the front passenger's door and the rear doors for the individual window.

All electrical windows are equipped with an excess force limitation system. Closing the window will be automatically terminated when an object blocks the closing window.

This is not valid when closing the window from the outside with an ignition key, then the excess force limitation system is not operative.

Function of window regulator with ignition switched on

Opening

Switch in driver's door

● Front windows:
‒ Press front section of switch down to 1st detent. The window will open as long as the switch is being operated.
‒ Press section of front switch briefly down to 2nd detent. The window will open automatically (automatic fully opening system).
‒ If the switch is operated again the window will stop immediately.
● Rear windows:
‒ Press front section of switch down. The window will open as long as the switch is being operated.
Switch in front passenger's door and rear doors

‒ Press lower surface of switch. The window will open as long as the switch is being operated.
Closing

Switch in driver's door

● Front windows:
‒ Pull front section of switch up to first detent. The window will close as long as the switch is being operated.
‒ Pull front section of switch briefly up to 2nd detent. The window will close automatically (automatic fully closing system).
‒ If the switch is operated again the window will stop immediately.
● Rear window:
‒ Pull front section of switch up. The window will close as long as the switch is being operated.
Switch in front passenger's door and rear doors

‒ Press upper surface of switch. The window will close as long as the switch is being operated.
Function of window regulator with ignition switched off

The window regulators can be operated for approx. 10 minutes after switching ignition off, as long as the driver's or front passenger's door have not been opened.

The automatic closing function is inoperative when closing the front windows.

If the driver's or front passenger's door window meets excessive resistance or an object during the closing sequence (excessive force limitation) the window will open again immediately.

In this case the window can only be closed again when the ignition is switched on.

The windows can be opened and closed from the exterior on vehicles with a central locking system. The key must be held in the lock or unlock position.

Setting automatic opening and closing

Note:

The automatic opening and closing features for the driver's and front passenger's windows do not function after disconnecting and reconnecting the vehicle battery.

To reinstate this feature after reconnecting the vehicle battery proceed as follows:

‒ Lock vehicle from outside using driver's or front passenger's door.
When doing this, ensure that all doors and windows are closed completely.

‒ Unlock vehicle and lock vehicle again at driver's or front passenger's door. When doing this hold the key for at least one second in the lock position.
The automatic opening and closing functions for the driver's and front passenger's window is reactivated.

If there is a fault with the electrical windows then this will be signified by the fact that the switch illumination in the driver's and front passenger's door as well as the rear doors flashes.

All lights in the door trim will flash for approx. 15 seconds after switching on the ignition.

post how you get on i may have more info for you

try this...
Door windows
Over coming resistance with excess force limitation
● Prerequisite: Automatic opening and closing is OK.
● Ignition switched on.
‒ Close door window with window regulator switch (automatic closing).
If the window in the driver's or front passenger's door is impeded because it is tight or through an object during the closing sequence (force limitation intervention) the window will open immediately.

‒ After the window has opened the relevant window switch must be lifted or pressed and held within 5 seconds.
If the window is impeded again because it is tight or through an object the window will stop immediately (force limitation intervention).

‒ After the window has stopped the switch must be operated within 5 seconds again to close the window.
The window will now close with excess force limitation intervention beyond the obstruction.

● Ignition switched off.
If the window in the driver's or front passenger's door is impeded because it is tight or through an object during the closing sequence (force limitation intervention) the window will open immediately.

Operations using the interior window regulator switch is now blocked.

If the ignition is switched on and the switch pressed (window closed) within one minute of opening the window the window will close without automatic closing.

the above is for a 2003 golf btw

try this then.. seems to make sense
Problem description
Despite pressing the switch the window stops before it closes.

Cause
The electric window lifter has not been correctly initialised.

After a voltage disruption - reset, replacement of window lifter motor, battery disconnection, fuse damage or removal - the windows are not initialised and therefore have no more orientation to the upper stop (closed position).

Production solution
No change.

Service solution
Initialise the electric window lifters after a reset (battery disconnected for at least 30 seconds) when the ignition is switched on:

Through inside switch

When using the inside switch every window must be initialised as follows:

• With open windows:
1. Press the switch Lift till the windows stop.
2. Release the switch.
3. Press the switch Lift for at least 2 seconds.
4. Automatic cut out.

In the same way carry out the initialisation when lowering the windows.

• With closed windows:
1. Press the switch Lift till the windows stop.
2. Release the switch.
3. Press the switch Lift for at least 2 seconds.

In the same way carry out the initialisation when lowering the windows.

After the initialisation check the function from inside and outside as well as the comfort locking.

Please check peripheral components before any window lifter motor replacement.

Carry out the reinitialisation of the electric sun roof in the same way.
