I think I'm right in saying that the Mk4 was only available in 3-door form for the first year or two.
Plus most people tend to think the 3-door looks better (same with most hatchbacks), and only go for the 5-door if they have kids. But like said above, it's not the roomiest car in the back, so families would probably go for a bigger car anyway.

I had a five door Sport TDI ( I have kids ).
Many potential owners of the five door sportier models will have bought the Fabia vRS instead which was cheaper and more comfortable, and a better all round package. At least until the recent Ibiza facelift, which has shifted the goal posts again (a bit; the Fabia is still a lot cheaper ).

I bought a 2 door as its only me and my boyfriend that use it, I occasionally give my lil sis a lift, but it doesnt really take much effort to flip a seat forward.
I see 4/5 doors as more of a family car thing
