A few weeks into ownership and the shitty old 2.0tdi has reared its third problem!

Had a egr fault come up, so set about stripping down the inlet manifold and egr valve for a good clean, its probably never been done in 78k!

After much chew on, i finally got the egr off and it was coked up to hell! Left it soak in some break cleaner while a removed the inlet manifold to give that a good clean too....

Eventually got it off to find the swirl flap bar loose, and the very end swirl cracked! Great!

Now ive delt with swirl valves before, bmw, vauxhall etc... and i know how much of a pain in the arse they can be. But ive never seen anything as cheap and nasty as the setup on the 2.0tdi bnm engine, designed to fail really.

So basically whats happened is the swirl rod has worn through the plastic bushes that it sits in inside the manifold. Everyone of these has a considerable amount of play, but the very end one (closest to passenger side) has completely cracked and is just rattling about! If this had parted company with the rod id potentially be looking at engine failure!.

Sooo...by this time its 4 o'clock and i need the car to get back to work tomorrow, a 140mile trip. Decided to clean it up as best i could, remove the knackered swirl flap, and inspect the others, all of which were worn, but structurally sound.

So now it looks like ill be trying to source a second hand bkd alloy manifold to replace this plastic shite with!

I struggled to find a how to guide on this, so when i come to replace the manifold ill take a few pics and post a guide up.

But id suggest anyone who hasnt inspected them, to do them asap. After all mine had only 78k on.

I gave up with diesels a few years ago now, due to some but not all of the reasons you've mentioned.

I came to the conclusion after my own experiences and talking to a few mechanics that unless you do loads of miles there just not worth it, as they are more unreliable than most petrol equivalents.

The older diesels were great untill they made them more refined for the masses.

They also made more sense back then when the price of diesel was really cheap. It was a win win situation.....not anymore. i'd never have another, from any marque.

Exactly my thinking, im a mechanic so i know all about the problems modern diesels face, but with a change of career and a 500 mile a week commute petrol just isnt efficient enough, but then again the costs of the problems im having with this diesel, i could of continued to run my previous 22mpg petrol for over a year lol.

Its also developed a rattle from the flywheel over the last few days, so saturdays work will be clutch, flywheel and manifold.....wish me luck
