Whirring Noise - bearing or CV joint

After having dived away from idiot and a near miss collision managed to catch near side wheel on the kerb. [:@] (sourced new alloy wheel as proper scraped and will be difficult to repair)

Tracking has been reset but have whirring noise. Quiet when set off but as reach 30/40 mph whirring noise gets louder, stays constant whether straight or turning left/right. Think this will be the bearing as opposed to CV joint/drive shaft....hopefully nothing gearbox related

Noise was originally quiet but as weeks have progressed getting louder...

How difficult is a wheel bearing to replace ? done most most things but not changed a wheel bearing. may as well try this first as likely to be cheaper.....

Thanks in advance

Changing a wheel bearing is relatively straightforward.
You will need a flypress to install the new bearing though.

Sorry to be dragging up an old thread, but this sounds extremely similar to a problem I'm having so I'm wondering whether it was your wheel bearing, and if changing it sorted it out?

I have the exact same noise at speed that you do, and it is definitely speed not engine rev related as it is the same with clutch on at 70mph as it is when ragging it in 3rd at the same speed.

I have done 3 things to my car recently which could have caused it, one was clipping a curb and ruining my tire. I have dinged someone slightly in the snow a couple of weeks ago but the only damage to my car was cosmetic (hole in bumper from his towbar, light cluster, grill split, slightly bent bumper). I have also fitted a towbar, which could have changed the aerodynamics at the back, but I'm fairly sure the noise is coming from the front, and most likely related to clipping the curb and ruining my tire.

Same symptoms, noise around 30/40mph, gets higher pitch at speed, is slowly getting worse. I have changed the wheels around with spares, noise still exists, so it isn't wheel or tire related.

Things I think it could be, are the gearbox, bearing, or CV joint. Nothing else is related to the speed of the car, is it?

Any ideas anyone?

Cheers

Yep me to, I have a deep whining noise, I've checked me steering for play but it's nice n tight with no knocks so I'm replacing the bearing. I'm pretty sure if there's play in the steering it's the cv as it has movement if not it's the bearing

Yeah, mine was my front near side wheel bearing. I thought it was my off side because thats the side I clipped and damaged so I changed that one, noise still there. Changed near side, noise gone.
