Where to locate a cooling unit on an LCR

Where would be the best place to put a cooling device on a LCR with FMIC? Im looking at putting either a mini refrigeration until or a petlier (sp?) on wither the airbox to cool it down or either the inlet or outlet of the manifold. Now this man not be worth it but for £20 I thought id give it ago as these unit are capable of creating ice, so must be able to help on stupidly hot days.

Best place would surely be the gap left by the side intercooler.

What is it your on about anyway scotty?

Basically im looking at the best surface to use for conduction cooling, which will have the biggest impact (which is why im thinking of bolting it to the under side of the induction kit). The units im on about are industrial type units so will be capable of working under the LCRs temperatures (obviously not by the turbo etc). What im trying to achieve is cooler more dense air, more or less what IC sprays and C02 blankets/pendulums are trying to achieve.

gotcha... i think.

You want to refrigerate the underside of the airbox? Presumably hoping this will cool the air as it flows through the airfilter?

Will the airs residence time be sufficient to actually cool it? An intercooler hugely increases the surface area of the air which means it can be cooled very rapidly. I'm not sure how effective refrigerating the airbox would be?

how does this cooling device work? if its like an industrial fridge they work by removing heat rather than creating cold.
therefore you would also need to take into account removal of the hot air.

however, they would have to be seriously powerful to even have a minimal effect on inlet temps.
and therefore probably detrimental rather than beneficial to performance

When i put my hand on my airbox (CDA unit) its red hot so i was thinking by creating a cold houseing it should aid in getting more air through the turbo initially.

Heat will be removed via a fan and duct to the wheel arch

cooling the intake air itself does not seem to have much of an effect on the Leon's performance. Consider that most of the colling you do will be undone by the turbo. Cooling the intercooler is a much better bet IMHO.

Worth a try, though. I've heard of this for CPU cooling when overclocked (remapped computer's!) anyway let us know how you get along.

But the only way you'd get denser air into the airbox would be to cool down all the ambient air.

Peltier device on the intercooler would be best, I think it would be better on the outlet side. Difficult to mount with the stock intercooler setup (they have plastic end tanks), unless you can put one on the crossover pipe.

End tank of a forge/whatever FMIC would be a good place.

Might be good on the inlet manifold itself, but the heat output would add to the engine bay heat

Bill ran peltier (a) device(s) for a while, have you done a search?

Edit: I wonder why your airbox is getting hot, I can't say I've noticed mine being hot  It might get hot after it's been stood for a bit after a run, but I don't think it gets hot during a run...

Also, have search on audiworld - I seem to remember Steve Schwing doing some testing on airbox temps and the effect on IAT.

heat loss is in proportion to electricity used so the extra power you may release with a peltier heat shunt will be more than outwayed by its load on altenator ie aint nothin for nothin! Sorry!! I looked into this, we used small ones for active cooling of ic's at work!

Bill posted ages ago about using them on this misses arosa but now news as yet.

I think i will look into setliers a bit more as they seem better/easier to wrap around pipes
