I tried opening under the glove compartment but can't see anything that may look like a filter.

The aircon is really poor at the moment and it gives out a bit of a smell, pretty sure the filter is very dirty.

If you want I can attach a couple of pics of what one would see under that cover beneath the glove compartment.

Cheers guys! Any help would be greatly appreciated;)

IIRC there are 3 screws that hold the panel to get to the pollon filter. The screws are located under the glovebox. Remove these and drop the panel. Then there are two slide catches that hold the filter housing in place - the rest is obvious.

slide them into the middle and it drops down , the filter is housed in a plastic frame , you have to reuse this , , also there is a wrong wayy and a right way to put the filter in , there will be an arrow stamped on the side showing airflow direction, check the old one as u remove it ,

You have to slide those catches. The catches hold the housing in place. One moved the the filter housing will pull down.

ok just went down to the garage and sorted it out. I don't have a new filter but a simple blow with an aircompressor seemed to do the trick.

I tried it on and was surprised as I had almost forgotten how good and efficient the aircon can be!

Thanks a lot for the prompt help!!

I was surpised how black pollen filters can get. I changed the one in the Passat about 4k miles ago, and the new one is black already.
Shows how much crap is in the air ! (Although I can't complain, driving a sooty :) )

I think i should have a play with this tonight as my AC is not as good as it used to and im sure it doesnt need re-gassing. I hope this is the key!

I checked mine tonight. Not difficult but pretty fiddly and uncomfortable with your head stuck under the glovebox. Just 4 torx screws and some clips to undo.

The filter was a bit mucky and there were assorted leaves and a bit of cellophane in there as well. A quick blast with the vacuum cleaner got rid of most of the debris but I did discover that the filter wasn't located in the housing properly and had become distorted so that it wasn't sealing at the edges. I guess it must have been like that since the factory fitted it – doesn't inspire too much confidence in the way the car is assembled.

Still, that's another bit of the car I now familiar with thanks to SCN.:)

Woooahh what a difference. having checked my previous service reciepts - my filter wasnt replaced at 20k or 40k!? (its now on 56k - and i owned the car since 41 so not my fault entirely!)

Just took it out and there was leaves, trees, animals - everything in there. One side was completely think black gunk, the other side it has managed to seep through also.

The fans are so much more powerful now and the AC is almost twice as effective (always thought it needed re-gassing!). Cheers for the hints guys, £12 for a new filter and 2 spanners for difficulty! Anyone retrofitted a green panel filter in there? - might help with performance ;)
