Where can i find Gearbox Codes?

Right i have now found that my car does have an 085 gearbox. Its an 1.4 AEX engine but i need the 3 digit gearbox code apparently to fully identify it. Ive tried looking on the gearbox - no joy, and I cannot see it on the boot or engine stickers. Does anyone have any ideas?? oh and its not listed in the sevcie book either! ive been told it should begin with a C or D

That's a poor answer - any dealer can access the same info, and the 085 is certainly covered.

SEAT UK do have the answer to this though the dealers ETKA system would not
you have CWU gearbox code

The older the car the less likely that SEAT UK have the info on their database, it is hit and miss for anything this age or older ('96).

As far as the dealer is concerned they have to rely on ETKA and for cars older than about 1999 the info usually won't come up. The dealers then have to rely on whatever info SEAT UK have (see above)

Im in the process of getting a second hand gearbox for my car. As long as it is an 085 and from a 1.4 AEX it shoudl fit right?? does the code need to be the same as my gearbox though as i thoght the code is just for ratios? sorry for all the ques.

ive sourced a gearbox from a 1.4 AEX 1997 polo to fit my 1.4 AEX 1995 ibiza........you guys think it will be the correct one?? the scrappy couldnt tell me if it was an 085 or not. cheers.

i don't have the techie knowledge to help you there Ben but I would guess it is the same. Your best bet is to call a VW dealer and ask them what gearbox fits the polo. The Ibiza ratio is 62/16

Polo gearbox should fit. 1,4 16v boxes will fit 8v, but not the other way round.

By the way the gearbox code is stamped on top of the gearbox, under the water gubbins on the side of the engine.

Could someone tell me what code my box is please, my gearbox is an 085 and has dropped 5th...

My dealer also tell me my VIN is too old and cannot access the info to tell me, plus do not have the Owner's Handbook. DOH!
