Wheel vibration

I've mentioned this in another thread but I thought I'd start my own thread.

I've had vibration since getting a set of tyres fitted a while back, they insisted the wheels balanced. Anyway, I actually needed another set fitted not too long after those due to some utterly bizarre worn centres (NOT overinflation!) Anyway, new set of tyres and obviously rebalanced, vibration still there.

This points to it not being the rubber itself or a damaged rim (a damaged rim would show up in balancing would it not?)

Either that or they weren't balanced properly both times.

The vibration is at around 85 and varies dependant on road surface, some surfaces its very pronounced (seems worse if cornering) some surfaces there's no vibration at all.

I'm considering getting them rebalanced, any other ideas, worn suspension components?

if the wheel tyre combination are correct and tyres have no bulge in the edge and balancing is correct it could be a weak suspension strut/damper could cause the vibration. you have not said where the vibration is coming from front or back. try swapping the from and back wheels about to give you some sort of indication as to which wheel/axle it is coming from. if you have a full spare wheel use that as well and see if it is a wheel or axle issue.

Hi Simon,

The vibration is felt through the steering, fronts were swapped with rears when the last set of tyres went on with no difference as far as I can remember.

I would get another tyre place to check the balance of them for you.
Prehaps the initial garage you used machines are out.

But would you be able to determine if the rim is buckled by putting it on a wheel balancer, basically how can I rule out if the rim is damaged or not?

only way is to watch the wheel when it is spinning when on the machine and see if it looks out, or square
eggs in the tyre lumps bumps n all that kinda stuff. if the wheel dont need a house brick of weight on the edges on the rim. you would think the rim would be fine.

How new are the front discs ? if they are warped a bit like a banana they can cause a kick back thru the pads and shake your wheel and foot brake
