Wheel bearing problems - a strange coincidence...

I had problems with my wheel bearings at the start of this year. To cut a long story short, the garage had trouble finding which one it was, but it got fixed eventually, and turned out to be the left rear. My dad has an 06 plate Ibiza too, a 1.4 Stylance. Both registered within a month of eachother, although mine is a pre-facelift and his post. Last week his car developed the wheel bearing noise from the rear. What are the chances of that?! Is it a problem with cars of that age or what? Mine's on 71k and his is around 32k-ish.

The other theory is it's the cold weather and all the crap they're putting on the roads here instead of grit, but we're not very mechanically minded, so we're not sure.

Have you taken a look through the road drain gratings - out our way it looks like its turning into cement - so there is another problem on its way when we get the usual (wet) Spring weather!

Sorry no comment to make on bearing failure, my wife's Polo 1.4 SE is 2003MY on 65+K with 15" VW alloys but so far no problems in that area.
