....and why is it leaking coolant through the 4 spaces at the top??? Not a lot coming out, more seeping, but an annoyance all the same. Any ideas??

Looks very much like the hose space where the coolant temperature sensor goes which relays information to the ECU. I recently replaced mine, but if im right about what i think i see it should have a sensor in the place of what looks like a bung, and a clip which inserts onto the sensor (wiring). You have a twin wire connector (two pins) floating about. Without having a more zoom out picture a cant be sure. Atleast i have incouraged people to post and make me look stupid if im wrong :p if nothing else.

I cant see the engine running right at all without it tho

Sorry the sensor is four wire. Mine looks like this:

New one cost me £10, Do you have the brown connector floating about?

is that an air-con related sensor as my afb without aircon just has the plastic bung like above

I cant see how it would have anything to do with aircon. Its a coolant temperature sender and sits in the coolant stream. I was under the understanding that the ecu relies on information from this sensor (replaced it when i had dodgy tick over). But then again if this was the case then how are cars without this sensor still driving fine!

aircon ecu also has a coolant temp sensor, just checked it on autoddata

do you have aircon? if yes then that sensor must be the aircon one, hence why our no aircon cars dont have it

some use the one below it and AC/MFA adds options for temperature reading and other things so they are a bit mix and match.

if you have water in the 4 sections (plug) then it's split and leaking

I would have expected the large four wire sender to be for water temp needle and ecu. Thats crazy, would explain alot tho. Got AC me although never used it.

Cheers for all the advice folks, my car doesnt have A/C so it looks as tho its just a bung and has sprung a leak somewhere, bit of crap design tho isnt it? it looks like a 2 piece affair as theres a retaining clip on it. Cheers again TF

P.s what do I ask for when ordering a new one? has it got a specific name or is it just a coolant hose bung/stopper/blanking piece etc ????
