Hey people, I'm looking at getting some new products for washing and polishing my car. I love my car but when it comes to polishing it I'm very new at it. My normal routine for cleaning my car is as follows

- rinse car with hose pipe
-snow foam
-then use the two bucket method using turtle wax zip wax
-rinse car
-then two bucket method using turtle wax ice synthetic rapid-drying shampoo
-then use turtle wax synthetic liquid wax
-then use meguiars nxt generation tech wax spray
-then finally car plan demon shine

That's what I usually do for the paint work

Then I clean the windows using auto glym fast glass

Them I attack the wheels using meguiars hot rims all wheel cleaner and auto glym instant tyre dressing.

I like the results once I have finished but then I also look at the car and often wonder if I could make it shine more. I would like some advice on what people on here use and if anyone could put together a list of products and a routine for me to try. My car is going to be at a car show late march 2012 if all goes to plan so would like the car to shine more. With it being a black car it does show all the dirt and stuff so when I am at the show is there something I can do to bring the car back to the shine it had the day before. Also my window rubbers are starting to fade. What can I use to bring them back to a nice black finish?

Thanks and i am looking forward to hearing from you all.

I'm a big fan of Poorboys-my basic routine finishes off with Natty's blue and trim restorer for the plastics (after Zymol shampoo and Dodo Juice Lime Prime pre wax). The Ibiza needs hitting up with the SSR2.5 first though, the previous owner wasn't quite up to my standards...
Have you ever clayed it? The first time I clayed a car,it felt like becoming a member if some secret club. Magic.

Its a mine field, I've tried auto glym and imo its one of the worst i've used, so went onto turtle wax, then tried 3M products, which i'm going to stick with. I treat the alloys the same as the paintwork, 3M tyre dressing. Windows either nilco or Sonax.

If I were to try anything new I'd try some Bilt Hamer. . .

Have a look through some of the detail threads on here to see what people are using and the results they are getting, thats the best way to help you to be honest.

One tip i will give you for now, clean the wheels first, unless you do and the above just isnt in order... spraying wheel cleaner over the wheels when the car has just been cleaned runs the risk of the product blowing over the paint and wheel cleaners arent good for paint... doing them first means you then wash off any product that may have touched the paint

Ssr2.5???

Nah I have never clawed it, i do t really understand what it does or how to do it lol

I use Bilt Hamber soft clay, once a year, i went for this over others as you lubricate it with water, so the clay bar and hose in the other hand however, i polish my car most months and i may only clay it every other year from now on, but I will always clay a car when its new to me. . .

SSR2.5 is a Poorboys swirl remover/light cutting polish.
Clay removes bonded contaminants (tree sap, tar spots etc) from the paint-it makes the paint feel really smooth to the touch and makes polishing easier. There's plenty of videos and guides on how to do it and Meguiars do a good starter kit. You won't be disappointed...like GT said,it's a once a year job,but it's totally worth the effort.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I have looked around at different shampoos and waxes and things but never know what one to buy lol. In the summer I try and wash my car properly 2-3 a month and in the winter it's more like once a month because it's so cold (yes I'm a wimp lol) I do go to a few local car club meets and really like it when my car is shinning because it gets more attention, is it best to give the car a full wash before each meet or just use a quick detailing spray? I early want to get into the whole detailing of my car but it's like a minefield.

You'll end up with a garage full of barely-used concoctions before you find what's right for you,but that's part of the fun.
As a good start, Dodo Juice do a lot of their waxes in small tester pots-probably worth a go?

Google 'dodo juice test' and the first hit's their sample page. You can leave out all the light colour specific products to start with,so there's a few sample packs that'll let you try a load of different waxes without breaking the bank.

I have heard a bit about dodo juice products, just don't know which one to try.

As i said, have a read through the other detail threads on here and places like DetailingWorld to see what people are using.

You will end up buying products and part using them before moving on to something else but as long as you dont go crazy you should be ok.

I tend to buy into something which i have seen a lot of reviews for and seen the results others are getting... very rarely buy something thats new just because its hyped as the next best thing.

If you like going to meets then i would recommend a wash before. if the car hasnt been washed for a week before you go then a QD isnt going to be a great idea. it will clean the car up but there isnt enough in them to lift the dirt effectively, you'll end up ruining the paint.

A QD is fine for a dust down once you get there, with a nice thick MF cloth.
