Definitely worth taking a look at this post:

Inparticular:
"All these cars that I have mentioned are non PD. My old VW T4 van is a daily driver with almost 200tkm on the clock and more than 300hp under the hood with diesel only. Even that it is 2.5TDI 5cyl inline, that means something like 230-240hp on a 1,9TDI plus it's harder to get top power out of the 5cyl as pump head tends to float more easily. I have a wide powerband with more than 200kW between 3300-5150rpm and some top power is sacrified to get decent low end as 2000kg van needs it badly. With steeper cam that I already have tried, I can get something like 20-30hp and 350rpm more, but that's useless in a daily driver as it totally killed the low end.
Without opening the head we have difficulties to get past 220hp on our dyno and power won't carry to 5000rpm. With the 1.9TDI we are trying to get past 250hp and with this big VNT (well, it's actually quite small as I have GT32v, GT37v and GT42v in my posession too) we ought to do it. Maybe we could have made it even with the GT2252v, but EMPs would have been dangerously high and we didn't want to brake anything. I'm just a little worried about the low end as this car is a daily driver too."
"Although you can fit as large a turbo as there is room in the engine bay, i think for a road car, the GT1749vb is one of the best options, as it has a good A/R rating, & can make more boost without grenading or bearing/spindle damage, but due to the small size/high velocity, does rapidly heat the charge if the steady psi is too high.
The GT18-v's are also good for quick spool hybrid's, as thay have thicker housings to machine."
