A little bit of useful knowledge on this issue.

I am having my car serviced in 20 days time and have an oil issue with my FR - it simply uses too much irrespective of driving style. So, I mentioned this to my dealer and we had the following dialogue

Me: My car is using a lot of oil on a monthly basis so perhaps its something you can address when the car is serviced.
Dealer: What type of oil are you buying?
M: Well I looked in the manual and I buy one of the four suggestions, VW501/502, etc
D: Ok but which brand?
M: Either Castrol GTX, or Mobil I think
D: Well you should be aware that you must use the correct oil supplier for your car - it should say it in detail in the manual or the filler-cap.
M: Oh, and if I dont?
D: If you dont, then should your car suffer any issues which can be directly related to the type of oil, e.g. engine component issues, the warranty will not cover you
M: Right, thats stupid.
D: I agree, but its the guidelines we have to follow.

The above is a true conversation - I decided to type it out when on the phone so I had record of it. Its shocking, and I will think twice before buying any other brand of oil.

The above is total shite as it it conforms to the correct VW standards then its fine. They obviously wouldnt be able to tell what oil your using anyway.

I use the Halfords Fully synthetic 5W30 for VW/Audi which conforms to VW505/507 and exceeds all previous standards.

That was what I said to the chap, but it made me contemplate having a thorough read through the manual.

My FR also uses a lot of oil, has done since new. I have to put near enough 1ltr in half way between each service (5w30 Castrol Edge) but I often put that down to the fact the garage don't seem to fill her up, as it were.

This may just be the TFSI though, as I never had to do this in my old LCR.

I am using Motul 300V 5w-40 and my car has zero oil consumption for the last 9.000km.

thanks for your feedback-was going to ask the dealership what they recommend to use but will check the manual anyway.

I have driven a Seat Leon Cupra since July 1st 2009. I had the Repsol oil within replaced at 2000km mark with Castrol Edge 0W-30. Before the oil change the engine had consumed about half a litre of oil. I'm now at 16000km (10000miles) mark and no oil has been consumed at all since the 2000km oil change.

You might wonder why did I change the oil at so low mileage. I thought it would cleanse the engine from all the little bits and pieces of shite from the factory. I know a lot of people in Finland who have their 2.0FSi or TFSi consuming oil 1l/1000km rate. Mine does not. Whew. :funk:

Thanks for thoughts. I ended up speaking to the dealer I bought the car from and was recommended 10W 40 oil for the Cupra(says vw505 on the back). Bought some Mobil on Saturday. I'm sure it will do the trick.
