hi

need to change the oil on my LCR 210, was thinking of either valvoline edge 5w 30

or castrol magnetec 10w 40

have been advised by my local garage that as the engine has 70k on it i should go for the castrol, as a thicker oil on aged engines is better

can anyone advise please

cheers

Don't even think of putting that Castrol Magnatec crap in your engine. Your local garage sounds like an imbecile. Also I think you meant to say Castrol Edge 5w 30 didn't you? That would be good, as lomg as it has VW504/507 on the bottle and is that particular weight.

no i did mean valvoline edge, i think theyve copied the castrol version

so should i stick to 5w 30???

the garage i went to is well known round here, the guys a top mist evo engineer, one of the best, travels to dubai every year for the rally and fixes evos from around the world.

putting that aside 10w 40 is def a no no then ????

Agreed!!!! stick in 5w 30 only. I use the castrol edge 5w-30 and find it really good. vw504.00 is the LCR so any 5w-30 that has that on the bottle is good enough.

I used to use 10/40 before on my old LCR 210 ,i had to top up every 2k, it was shite, i went to 5/30 fully synch and its last so much longer, it nearly lasts for my whole 6k service interval.

Castrol Magnatec is semi synthetic, and that is absolutely a bad thing for a turbo engine. As for the Valvoline Edge I've not heard of it to be honest, but there are many oils out there which are easier to lay hold of than Valvoline. Personally I'd run with a VW specified oil as I stated, and as long as the oil you choose is to those specs then you'll not go far wrong. Valvoline Edge may or may not be the required spec, I couldn't say.
