What MPG should I get a from standard '54 tdi FR?!?!

Hi,

I have a '54 plate 1.9tdi FR with 68k on the clock and I wanted to know what miles per gallon (MPG) other people are getting?!

I have had it a year and I am sure I used to get about 55MPG at motorway speeds (80+). I recently had to replace the intercooler, as well as the turbo and intercooler pipes, as they were loose. Even after replacing these I seem to get 40MPG at 85mph, 2.5-.75 rpm in 6th. The instant readout says 30-60 but changes constantly. Although, I end up with a MPG reading of circa 40-50MPG on a 150 motorway run going between 80-100 all the way.

Any comparisons would be good, as I am sure it is thirstier that it used to be.

my foot is a bit lighter (or my wallet is tighter)
at 70-75 I get 60+ average for motorway run (carrying 3 people plus stuff), best I've done with just me in car is about 64 mpg. That's a '52 1.9TDI Sport (same engine different gear ratios I believe).
My mpg dropped about 3 or 4 after kwikfit 'serviced' the car, got better again after Seat place serviced it.

granny driving I managed 56.4mpg average
normally mostly town I got as low as 38 average of a tank

Round town 42-45 mpg

Over the moors from leeds to whitby the other week 57 mpg (not exacttly a sedate pace either)

very steady run mix of a road and motorway to weymouth was 65.8 mpg!!!!

57 plate Fr tdi with a blt engine if that makes any difference

Mine (chipped PD130) does 38mpg most of the time. 35 if I overtake more people, 45 if I drive like my great-grandmother.

My dashboard gives totaly different numbers and believes I always do 45mpg, but I write down how much diesel I put in it and how much I drive, and that results in a 38mpg average, which is pretty poor for a modern diesel, but is still affordable for a ±160bhp car. (most +150bhp petrol cars don't even get 25mpg).

Sounds a bit low to me...

Cupra tdi, i averaged 56mpg while doing bang on 70mph pretty much all the way on a 120 mile journey at the weeked. My daily commute seems to produce about 48mpg. When thrashing the nackers i get mid to low thirties, track use somewhere in the twentys.

filters is a good place to start, made a differance to mine when i got them changed, and personally i would suggest using millers for about 4-5 fill ups, cleans out the pipes,

but to be honest the biggest saving would be made on lightening the throttle, my remapped fr at 65mph on the cruise control hits 65-70mpg on the cpu (so about 58 in actual fact) and at 75 55-60mpg on the read out so about 50-55mpg in real terms

just bare in mind the more electrics you have running the more your mpg will drop especially the a/c and any other heaters.

EDIT: and tyre pressures are correct, boot is empty (so the car is not loaded with crap and adding weight) you get the idea

Skimpy, i think your mpg sounds about right.
I used to cruise at 80-85 on a 35 mile commute(A road and Mway) to work, starting with a cold engine, would end up with mid 40's mpg. With hard over takes that would hit 40 or less.

Got fed up with this low number so started experimenting with the car.
Droping the cruising speed to 70 had a huge effect gained at least 10% improvement. Next was being less vigorous with the gas pedal, smoother less abrupt acceleration had a dramatic effect as well, put me into the 50's. At the end of a journey id end up with 54 - 60 mpg depending on traffic.

Another useful tactic was to let the engine warm up fully first before cruising at high speed or any hard overtakes, this would allow the mpg to get into the high numbers quicker and persist for more of the journey, and hard overtakes later in the journey wouldnt really hurt the overall mpg.

I get to work maybe 10 mins later than previous, but my wallet would be screaming at me alot less :)
The torque is still there when i need it, but its become a bit of a game to see how smooth(and less expensive) i can make the commute. Then again maybe im getting old :blink:

Standard 08 FR in winter = 45 mpg on a daily commute (no traffic) About 60 mpg on a steady run down to Clacton, fully loaded up.

I'm surprised how inaccurate some of your computer mpgs are?
My '02 PD130 gives very accurate read out of mpg
If I fill up at Asda it consistenty overreads by 3%
If I fill up at my Shell garage it consistently overreads by 1%
Which brings me to the conclusion that the volume tolerance on the supermarket pumps is screwed down to deliver 2% less fuel than at my Shell garage.....

its a well known fact when the car is remapped the ,mpg reading does go slightly outta kilter with reality :lol:
