XDS uses the abs braking system to slow down a wheel that is trying to spin.
It also slows down the inside wheel in a corner to aid turning.

The other type fitted to the Cupra models is the VAQ diff
This is a hydraulic adjusted limited slip differential.

To expand on what DEAN0 has correctly said above:

XDS uses the ABS system, specifically the ESP system, to apply braking pressure to the inside wheel when cornering to force the differential torque to the outside wheel. It's particularly effective when driving at medium speeds in low gears in closed or tight corners, longer sweeping corners it's less apparent.

The effective management of the drive torque causes corrective yaw torque which minimises the risk of understeer.

XDS - Non-Cupra
VAQ - Cupra

To add to the above - I don't believe it works from a standstill/low speed - so it's not a 'snow' mode if you have one wheel on snow or mud and it doesn't help pulling out of a side road, you'll still spin the inside wheel.
