Originally there was a 'sport' model, and the cupra was in essence a fully spec'd up leon sport so that it had all the options on it. eg, electric memory seats, auto wiper, cruise, auto dimming rear mirror, and was basically rebadged as a cupra by dealers in the uk. This may explain why on early cupras the badges were not always in the same place on the boot panel.
These early sped'd up cupras were £18,000 new - in year 2000!
The sport model had the same engine but basically no goodies / extras.
Then the sport was dropped and the cupra downgraded to take its place, most goodies then became an option and the cupra base price was therefore reduced.
Then later, there was a facelift.. ie new bumpers.
Then in 2003 the cupra R was released.
Then the cupra was bedadged as the FR.
and finally before the MK1 bit the dust, there was an FR+ (FR plus) model, which was the diesel cupra but with cupra R bumpers and alloys (although 17")
