What does burning brake fluid/power steering fluid smell like?

I've got a totally random one here, below the down pipe on the sub frame at the rear of the engine on my 2.0 8v some pipes cross that look like brake pipes. On these pipes there is a black tar-like fluid that is bubbling away with the heat from the down pipe. The fluid is smoking slightly and smells like super hot metal, like brake discs after some serious stick.

I've checked the fluids and everything is fine, and it might just be something i've picked up on my travels. But if anyone could help I'd appreciate it.

By the way the car is running absolutely spot on!

that sounds to me like dirty dried oil. u got an oil leak?

Well done you came closest!!

Turns out its axle grease which has settled on the sub frame below the down pipe.

Gonna hose it down over the weekend and see if any more comes out. It may have just got flicked out due to the amount of wheel spinning in the snow i'm told
