Not posted for a while but thought this was worth a posting.

Cars almost out of warrenty and I've been getting the low coolant waring coming on only on cold mornings. Booking in to get it changed as it's a known fault. Mention also that the cooling fans seem to be coming on alot and ask if it can be checked out too.

Seems the water pump was in the early stages of failing (plastic impellor breaks away from metal shaft). So new pump fitted plus a free cambelt change too.

Result :D :D

Thing is the cooling fans are still coming on alot so maybe the Climate is playing up :( :(

Anyone else have the climate fans cutting in almost as soon as they stop at junctions etc. I leave it on auto at about 21c most days ?

Turn off the compressor and see if the fans come on all the time then.

I had mine off for a while, turned on the other day and did notice the fans coming on quite a lot.

Good job you had it done before you had excessive heat problems!
mine had failed....sounded so rough....when it was taken out at easter (along with bush changed and drive belt) 1/3 of the impellor had competely snapped off......took a photo and posted it here:

Interesting that the pump you have is metal blade. Dealer told me the replacement was the same and not improved in any way as far as they now.

Best not keep it more than another 3 years then.

SEAT replaced the coolant sensor and bottle under warranty.. then replaced the pump and 2 front fans also underwarranty.. a day before it ended.

my mum has just had hers done on her golf.. and it cost her over 300 quid.

Think I'm going to get the water pump done at the same time when I have the cambelt done at 50k.

Seems no point not doing so if the cambelt is coming off anyway.

Will have to make sure to get a pump with a metal impeller.

How much are the pumps and what sort of labour time am I looking at to get the both done?

cambelt is checked at 60k, only changed if needed otherwise its 80k.

Better safe than sorry and I like to be over careful with these things.

A fair few around here have had the cambelt done early.

Cheers for those prices Neal - Is that price for the pump the one with the metal impeller?

Mine was a VAG part and was plastic

Is your Tolly a 1.8T??

mine is a 1.820v no turbo.......AGN

the pump cost around £25...........it is an exchange part (kinda like a MAF) we paid an extra £30 as a deposit and when we took the knackered pump back we got the £30 back. This was because my other half did the cambelt/pump jobs at work and we didnt have the stealer do it.

Will have a look tonight and see what the exact part number was of the pump we ordered for my car.
