My partner has no manual for his car, hes at work and has just seen a warning light on his dash which looks like a square box with dots in it, about 11 an has a pipe either side, one to the right slightly curved? any ideas what it is?

Yes sounds like the DPF, you dont have to drive at 60mph.... just high revs for 5/10 mins, he must have done a few small journeys in a row to build up some nasty soot! If I were him though I would phone the dealer and ask them EXACTLY what he should do seeing as he doesnt have a manual and didnt get told (obviously) about DPF regen.

I know its kind of an anti-green thing.... if you bumble about at low revs and low speeds the car TELLS you to floor it or there will be trouble!

manual states that you should drive at 60+ mph for 10 mins to clear it, tho i did 60+ for about 2 mins and mine cleared.:)

Hi guys,

thanks for the replys, just in from work after taking the car down the motorway and back up to clear the dpf, i had a feeling it was this and yes since owing the car i have done many short journeys, i had a feeling i would get the dpf error at some point of owning the car.

Got it on 23rd december and its just come on today, will check how many miles ive done to see how long it took to build up. Although the other night i did take it down the motorway and back up even though light was not on. I was preparing and trying to clear it anyway, can you not do this then? done that on sunday night.

Ive only had the light once in a year and that was when I had a week off and did a lot of stop start journeys so im not an expert! A blast on the motorway will certainly help but if you drive every now and then in 1 gear lower than you really should it will do the same I reckon and also its good fun! Its all about the exhaust not getting hot enough to deal with the soot that the filter collects I think.

If you notice the car idling at over 1k (it should normally be about 700) then it means the car has gone into 'regen' to try and clear the DPF and the engine sounds noticably rougher. If this happens then you should try and clear it before the light comes on.

Hope thats some help, but again im not an expert as I have only known the car go into regen a couple of times too, first time when I didnt know what it was and then the light came on (D'OH!) and one other time a few months back.
