what sound are you on about mate?

i think its a belt (and mine is doing the exact same noise, i suspect mine to be a powersteering belt, but haven't looked into it yet)

sorry....i mean the noise that comes in towards the end...if you listen carefully it sounds like a jet engine! from inside the car it comes in at 3-6k revs and sounds like a whine.
cheers
ps the dip stick is broken...need to find a replacement!!!

Edit the whines between 20 and 26 seconds on the vid.

ive got a modified air box with k&n panel filter. The belts are on the list...along with fitting coilovers....changing disks/pads all round...sort poor idle etc lol! .
having listened back to the vid...it's hard to hear it!! in the car though it sounds quite disconserting and i thought it was gearbox for a while, it may be that it goes when i change the belts.
cheers for your replies though!

try it with pas/alt belts off

won't hurt for 5 mins and will remove loads of possibles for noise check

changed the pas belt today...and the jet engine noise is still there, but the high pitched squeal is now louder...hm. weird. i couldnt work out how to release the alternator belt. There was some oil in the hose between airbox and throttlebody also there was oil leaking from the oil filter. hmph, may have to bite the bullet and getting a garage to sort it, but i really begrudge doing that! Another thought i had was to buy a head that has been ported and polished that's for sale and change the gaskets etc but im unsure what to do really :(

did you try it without the belt ?

new one fitted and over tensioned could be the reason your noise got louder ;)

i had a nightmare trying to get the damn tensioner to move lol...i'll have to have another go tomor...how does the alt belt come off? everything's going wrong all at once...my gears are starting to crunch abit , my clutch biting point has dropped, i can feel the road through the steering, steering knocks at full lock, all these weird whines and oil everywhere.

Have you checked the bearings in that alternator??

I had a similar noise for a while and it was the bearings in it. Best way to check is to put a screwdriver to it and the noise will transfer up the screwdriver.

Clutch biting point could be, dare i say it :banned: , the dredded pedal box issue. :headhurt:

rightey, had a look at the altenator...i stuck a screwdriver on it and i could feel lots of vibrations but cant tell if the bearings have gone... the sound definately comes from that area...so if someone could advise me on how to get the darned alt belt off I'll get a step closer to finding the issue! (i would consult mr haynes...but it's grown some legs)
