I've just bought a new laptop that unfortunately has windows 8.1 on it. I've installed vcds but I can't get it to work.
I've used it on good old windows xp with no problem and I seem to remember changing the com port number. Do I have to do this on windows 8.1? If so how do you do it as I can't work out how to do it never having used windows 8 before

I did and couldn't find anything that worked so I gave up. I installed xp on a virtual drive on my new laptop and ran vag-com through that.

Which version of vcds I mean. If it's 12.12 pm me your email address and I'll send you the drivers I have

I've got two cables neither are genuine one. The software installes ok but it doesn't install the drivers and when I try manually i get error message saying something about the software being corrupt.

That's may be part of your problem then. Your cable would have come with a version of VCDS that has been hacked to work with your particular clone cables and the drivers for that hacked version of VCDS may well not be compatible with Windows 8. You can't update clone cables to use a newer version of VCDS so that is one of the downsides and price you pay when buying clone cables.

So you may well be stuck with having to use an older version of Windows with your clone cables.

It works fine on my old laptop but as the battery is almost dead and only lasts 10 mins I was hoping to get it working on my new one. Looks like I will just have to use my old laptop as the virtual machine version works on some of the cars systems but won't long on to others like the abs system which is a bit odd.

I got working on a virtual machine but it wouldn't log on to the abs system but it logged on other systems ok.

Which means there's a VM exacerbated timing issue when specifically trying to communicate with the ABS module. You might be able to connect to some of the other modules OK but may find you have problems when trying to apply any coding / adaptation changes. It's just a case of suck it and see if running through a VM. There is no guarantee of any reliability.

Yes it was running quite slow and an error message came up when trying to log onto the abs system as it took so long.

I installed on windows 10 without any problem. It maybe related with your vcds copy.
