It's not really about when it's due for change because they can last for ages. It's not like a cambelt where there are scheduled changes, they should be inspected from 60K onwards as far as I am aware. If it's ready to be changed people advise that you also change the water pump at the same time as it's a fairly common failure and you save loads in labour costs to get them done together.
vw's vr6 engine is about 110k or when noisey and its not a cheap job as it gearbox out then cylinder head off as the chain is at the gear box end of the engine so if its not noisey i'd leave it well a lone as vw quote £2500 for vr6 engines
Don't know if i'm right but i'm sure there was talk, that you can get them adjusted, to take slack out of them, but as mentioned should not need changing for ages, so before you go and pay out, do your homework.
hmmm if im getting my gearbox replaced would it be worth me getting the timing chain done at the same time to prolong the engine?? (sorry for the slight thread hijack ) Mines a 2000 Xreg 10v V5 with 105000 on the clock.
So i believe, in general conversation, if you have yor clutch done, or gearbox removed , best time to do it, wheather it's adjusting the chain or replacing it, like i said only heard in conversation, hope its true, all about labour charges these days.
