V5 problem - advice required

Hi
I'm taking my V5 into the dealership on Thursday to have the Satnav fixed (6th time in 6 months!) - anyway thats another story.

The thing is I'm convinced my car isn't running right and I want to tackle the dealer over it - could anyone lend their opinion on the following symptoms please?

1) The car seems generally underpowered - sluggish in acceleration, struggles to top 100mph and won't go over 110. When the car is cold it seems to pull very strongly but as soon as it has warmed up it's pants.

2) The car mis-fires - this is especially noticeable at idle when I blip the throttle (ie you can hear it), and I've noticed it during acceleration as a slight falter. Do other people's V5s misfire at idle?

3) The fuel economy seems really low (even for a V5!) - around town it hangs around 19 mpg where I'd expect about 24. Last weekend I did a 500 mile round trip - mostly on the motorway sat at 75mph on cruise. I averaged 32mpg where I'd expect around 36 (?). What fuel economy should I expect?

I complained about poor running before to the dealer and they replaced the MAF which seemed to offer a slight improvement - but that was over a month ago and the car still doesn't seem right, or maybe I'm expecting too much.

To top it all - there is now a rattle from underneath at 2000rpm - sounds like the heat shield. Surely this shouldn't fail on a 2 year old, 17k miles car?

Any advice would be greatly received - I'm really starting to get ****'d off with car which is a shame as in every other respect it is a great car and I would find it very difficult to find another car that offers all it does for the money.

Its the 170 bhp one.

I wish I could drive another 170 version to do a comparison with respect to the performance and fuel economy.

Thats quite surprising to hear so many probs with the 170 version. Mind you I was not impressed by the motor and for me lacked any serious power. Best trip I made in it was going over to England. On the motorway it was a gem, very relaxing.

Hope you get your troubles sorted out.

If it helps, I only get around 32, max 33 mpg on a motorway drive. Average overall mpg on the computer always hovers around 30-31.

That's exactly what I'd be doing...... doesn't have to be a Tolly of couse. V5 Golf or Bora would be close enough to highlight any issues with your own. If it struggles to top 110, it sounds seriously unwell.

Even a 2nd had 10v would give a reasonable comparison. (?)

Another option of course is to spend £30-odds getting it dyno'd. If that shows you're only pushin' 110bhp then you have plenty grounds for complaint. Shape of the torque curve may give them some idea what's wrong too.

That's so far off the pace it's not true. I can get 130+ indicated easily (in the right country, etc) and see 25 or 26 mpg around town all the time. I get over 30mpg crusing just below 3 figures. The garage must accept there's a problem with that sort of power loss.

Those were the kind of figures I was expecting - thanks. Will see what happens on thursday when I take it in.

Good news (well, hopefully!) - the dealer has diagnosed a faulty Lambda probe which would seem consistent with the symptoms I was experiencing. Have to re-book the car in to get it fixed.

Thanks for your advice guys!

Hi jacknelle,
The V5 also suffer coil failures, normally either 1, 3, 5.
This could cause miss and poor fuel econ.
Also coolant temp senders have been known problem area and are now modified.

Best regards, Jochen.

Cheers.

Well, the lambda probe was replaced - seemed to cure the slight misfire and top end speed problem. The car still feels under powered though but then thats probably because I'm used to turbo charged cars.

Anyway, the V5 goes on Saturday when I pick up a Leon Cupra :D

Jacknelle,
glad you got it sorted, good luck with your Cupra.... Is it a brand new one or a used one?
Jochen.

Its a used one, on a 51 plate, 34k on the clock so nicely run in! I was lucky enough to find one with full leather interior as well, which is a bit of a bonus. I'll miss the Toledo's arm rest though - will have to see about retro-fitting one.

hi all,i got a v5 bora, just bought, took it for a test drive befor hand but you cant exactly thrash it when the owners at the side of you.i have a similar prob...no mil check, vag'd it,came back with
00561-mixture adaption
15-00
adaption limit(add)not reached,
symtoms exactly the same as above, lumpy, underpowered, bit thirsty.
ive googled n what-not,my first port of call is
1-clean maf sensor
2-clean throttlebody and align
3-clean rotary valve
this engine not only has the throttle valve but a secondary boost valve near front of manifold
any of these could be doing crap things with your power, going to haver a look this aft with some carb cleaner.
will post my results

right, results in..cleaned maf/throttlebody/tube valve on front of maifold.
worked, throttlebody and tube valve were disgusting...revs alot free'r.in places where i found i was changing down can now continue in same gear and pull...had to buy some special torque bits for maf tho,not the 6 sided star but 5
