USB port near rear view mirror - Possible?

Hi Guys,

I have got a dash cam from Santa. It's brilliant, apart from the annoying cable which has to get to the cigarette socket.

I am wondering if there is an ignition-live that runs to the lights loom next to the rear view mirror.

I'd like to add a surface mount USB socket there (using the voltage convertor from the current cigarette plug to get the 5v).

Does anyone have a wiring diagram, or know whether there is an ignition-live in that area (saving me ripping out the trim - never a good idea)

Thanks

Thanks for the link.

However, I don't want to have wires all over the place. I feel no matter how neatly you put them, it still looks shabby.

Is there an ignition live coming from the lights?

It can run off USB, so it's 5v 2A max. If it really came to it, I could change the incandescent bulbs for LED to avoid using too much current.

I don't know about the wiring to the lights, as mine come on before I start the engine (unlocking the car, opening the doors etc) it would suggest it's permanent.

My wire is tucked into the headlining and can only really be seen in one place for about 2inches on the dash near the drivers mirror.

I routed the cable for my dash came from behind the mirror between the headlining and windscreen.

To the pillar and behind that, took it out then and threaded it through the rubber seal for the door.

Around the glove box (it will fit around it) and through the paneling by the gearstick :)

Nice and neat and can only see the wire by the glovebox.

Its worth trying.

I've had a look again at your pictures in the link, but I cannot see any that show how you get from above the dash to below.

I keep looking, and I can only see options of removing trim.
