USB Option AFTER factory - dealer says it cannot be done ??

Hi,

I know there have been quite a few posts about this lately, but could someone in the know clear this up once and for all.

I have just been onto the local SEAT dealer, which is where i bought the car from, they are a dedicated SEAT dealer so i thought i'd ring them about getting the USB option fitted to my Mk5 Sport.

I am not really interested in the ipod option (as i don't have an ipod!), i simply want to be able to play music from a USB stick through the radio.

When i rang them about 6 months back they quoted me a ridiculous price of something like £220. So i thought i'd ring them again to see if the price had gone down. They have told me today that it is NOT available once the car has been built !. I told them that couldn't be true as they are the ones who told me it could be done 6 months ago !.

He said he had looked right through the catalogue and it was not possible to get it done once the car had left the factory !.

I am now batting my head off a brick wall because it was them who i was going to get to fit it !

1) Can anyone confirm that this option can be fitted after sales ? (not ipod, just USB)
2) Does anyone have any part numbers so that i can go back to them with some codes etc as ammo ! ?

Cheers,
Andy

It looks it, there's a really good guide on this site here (it's for a mk2 leon, but i'd imagine that it'd be pretty similar/identical for an ibiza)

alternatively, you'd local ICE specialist should be able to do it for about £20 i'd imagine (it cost me that to have some speaker cable routed to the rear of my old car which i imagine was much more time consuming than fitting the dension)

It does sound complicated ! - maybe i'll just get the double din cage from Halfords (£28) and buy a Sony Xplod BT unit (£70 form Argos Clearance) and fit that instead, thus keeping the bluetooth facility and gaining USB/SD support !. Cheaper and simpler !.

One thing though, if i was to swap the radio with another brand (with a double DIN fascia), would that leave the original bluetooth box "dangling" ?, or is the BT built into the actual original head unit on the mk5 Ibiza ??

ALSO..... what kind of screwdriver would i need to buy to get the original Head Unit out ? - it looks like a star shaped screw ?

Regards,
Andy

That I can't help you with, i'm still waiting for mine to be delivered (due end of sept)
at a guess it'd be a BT box external to the headunit as then SEAT would only need one type of headunit and just bolt on the BT bit when ordered but i don't know for definite.

Yeh that kinda confirms my suspicions!. I thought the Head Unit must be a standard one. It makes sense that way i suppose !.

I suppose even if the BT box was disconnected when i fit another radio then it shouldn't cause any issues, the wire would simply hang inside the console until which time i put the original radio back in when i come to sell the car !

Does anyone know the make of the Head Unit in the new Ibiza btw ?, there's no clues on the radio itself ?

Actually i've just noticed the fascia panel for the mk5 on ebay, but i'm not sure what colour to get (Dublin Grey, or Conemara Grey) ???. I have the 1.6 Sport in Black magic. The colours of those fascias look pretty similar, so which one would be the correct one ?

I know the radio is black, but the actual fascia around it (in the car now) is a grey colour.

(i suspect the Conemara Grey ??)

Going from those three photo's, i would agree with you, drop the guys at the ebay shop an email, i'm sure they'd be happy to let you swap them if it turned out to be the wrong colour.

Let me know which one it is in the end, i was set on keeping the factory HU, but seeing that fascia plate and the fact that it has a (much needed) storage space is tempting me to put my old clarion HU in

I'll drop them an email!. Yeh i agree, i have a Blaupunkt HU, which was the bizz, but it didn't have Blue Tooth so i may have to buy the Sony Xplod, which also looks the bizz and is only £79.99 at Argos Clearance.

Only problem is i lose the functionality of the audio paddle on the stalk (and the AUX IN for my TomTom) ! :(

Just found this out:

The new generation Ibiza comes with a great variety of interior design concepts and colours. The entry level Reference version uses Conemara Grey and Azabache Black on the softpad to match the door panels, Carbon Black on the visor, Grafito Grey on the dashboard body and Nano Grey on the ventilation nozzles.

The Stylance trim focuses on Black and Dublin Grey for the passenger softpad, Nano Grey on the visor and the nozzles, and Grafito Grey on the dashboard body.

The range's sportiest Sport version also features Black and Dublin Grey for the softpad and the area surrounding the ventilation nozzle between the steering wheel and the door, Nano Grey for the visor and air nozzles and Carbon Black for the dashboard body.

-------------

So it looks like it could be the Dublin Grey for the 1.6 sport ???

Andy

you'll need something like this (it says it's suitable for ibiza 2005 onwards) which will enable you to use the remote control input on the back of your head unit with the steering wheel controls (assuming the HU has an input for external controls, i'd imagine it has if it has bluetooth built in, but again, check first)

ahh, interesting find ! - i'll have to see what's on the back of my blaupunkt and/or the Sony one ! - cheers for that !
