Hi everyone, in less than 2 hours I need to get the Mrs to her little sisters birthday party 20 miles away and my car won't start from cold at all.

I have a 1.6 16v and the start sequence goes fine up until the point when it should catch and idle, about 600rpm. Then it just dies! Does anyone know what is it, how do i fix it and any temperary solutions to get it running?!?

Thanks in a panic, James

Well it eventually started after a fair few attempts, 30 maybe, not something i want to be going through again anyway!

I'm guessing its not the immobiliser as it only does it from cold and starts properly 1st time once its warm and its probably not the fuel as its running fine once its going, no hesitations or anything like that.

But maybe a better description of what happens will help

Key in, turn to normal postion, all lights on and out as usual except EPS (or whatever it says) and the little engine pic which both normally stay lit.

Turn key to start, engine turns over as usual, lights out as it gets up to 600rpm as normal, relese the key back to run position as normal then the engine just dies.

I have noticed when its been running fine that cold idle is higher, say 1100ish rpm. Its dying on me at 600rpm at the mo which is its normal warm idle. Like its thinking its warm! Does this fit the temp sensor issue mentioned by Lee69

Might be a Coolant Temperature Sensor issue as that controls (via a signal to the ECU) the ammount of fuel to inject from cold.

Assuming it is the sensor how easy is it to change or do i need to be thinking about booking it into a garage to get it running properly again and to make sure its not something more sinister? Thanks again people

THE CTS can give this problem, and seeing as the car is fine when warm it sounds like it to me.
Never changed it mate sorry, on my old car it was on the thermostat housing.

Got anyone local with vagcom to do a scan for you?

I posted for help with VAG Com about a week ago but heard nothing. There is a meet in a weeks time so if I've got no further will bring it up then if i go. Think the sensor is on the same housing too, i had a look earlier but couldn't see it, will get right in there tomorrow when its light and have a really good look around

Thanks for the help
