Unusual leak into footwell....

Hi all,

Yes, i've searched for leaking footwells, but nothing like this came up!

I was in the car on Sunday night, on the motorway, in fairly heavy rain, and i felt a drip on my foot.

Pulled into the services, and sure enough, water was dripping down the clutch pedal and onto my foot

Any ideas? I guess it's either coming in through one of the gromets (but enough to drip drip drip??!) or through the windscreen seal maybe?

It's definitely rainwater - it was cold there was no pink colouring or the 'feel' of coolant.

Cheers,

Anthony (Puzzled)

I had a clutch cable fitted not so long back & they didn't re-fit the grommet properley & as soon as it rained I got wet feet & carpets. You'll have to take the wiper cowling off & check for it under there (it's a simple job, try not to break any plastic trim tho!). Water from the windscreen runs off under the wiper cowling & should run down sides of the car, but will go thru the grommet if not on right.

Classic VW group design fault I'm afraid.

The drain holes in the scuttle panel will be blocked with leaves or something, leaving the whole panel full of water. As described, take the wiper arms off, the two plastic scuttle panels and clear the whole lot out.

I'm having a go at it this afternoon. Wipers off, no problem, but the four plastic screws..... how do you get these out? The screwdriver just seems to be mashing the head of the screws.

Cheers

They aren't screws. The are some sort of a clip. You need to put a screwdriver or a pair of long nosed pliers under the edge of the plastic disc and lever up - they should pop out no problem.

that would explain a lot. So when the Haynes manual says 'remove the four plastic screws', they don't mean screws at all.

I'll go and carry on then! (While cursing the Book of Lies :p )

Well, got the scuttle off - those plastic screws just pull out.

The panel was actually very clean, no leaves, just a bit of dust. The two drain holes (one at each side) were clear.

The clutch cable seal wasn't right though - there was a clean area of paint where it used to set. I just twisted it round so that it sits correctly in the hole going down through the panel. Hopefully that will cure it :)

Thanks
Anthony
